The Breast Reconstruction surgery is typically carried out by plastic surgeons. The procedure may be performed both in female and male patients that require breast tissue reconstruction. There are multiple reasons to opt for a Breast Reconstruction surgery including the correction of the physical appearance and to regain self esteem. Also, when the Breast Reconstruction is a necessary procedure, the costs will be covered by insurance.
1. Reconstruction of Lost Breast Tissues
Breast cancer can be a leading cause for the loss of 1 or both breasts in women. Breast cancer can also affect men. The only way to cure cancer is to remove the diseased tissues and this often involves removing the entire structure of the breast(s). This may not be a great problem for men, but in women, it can be a demoralizing experience and women often seek to replace the lost breast(s).
A Breast Reconstruction will repair the muscles and skin tissues by getting a skin graft from the patient’s body or from a donor. A prosthetic implant may also be needed to complete the surgery.
2. Repair Saggy Breasts
Even if saggy breasts can be repaired with a breast lift, there are a few patients that may require a Breast Reconstruction surgery to get back to the initial appearance of the breasts.
The breasts can become saggy due to:
- Aging
- Pregnancy (typically multiple pregnancies)
- Frequent weight variations
The breasts can be reconstructed, especially the muscles that lose elasticity in time. The reconstruction may be followed by adding an implant.
3. Reconstruction of Nipple and Areola
Some patients may only need the reconstruction of the nipple or areola, and the Breast Reconstruction surgery can do that. This procedure may be an option for male patients that have suffered from breast cancer. The nipple and the areola may be reconstructed by grafting a bit of skin from a different area of the patient’s body or a different person who is donating a skin graft.
4. Regain Self Esteem
A Breast Reconstruction procedure can be a boost for the self esteem of the patient. Losing a breast (or both) to cancer or different other accidents can be devastating for a woman, and getting a Breast Reconstruction surgery is a sure way to help. The breasts will be carefully reconstructed so that they look symmetric, and the patient will see no difference between the breasts before the accident or cancer and the newly reconstructed breasts. A skilled plastic surgeon will perform quality work.
5. Covered by Insurance
In most cases, the costs of the Breast Reconstruction surgery are covered by the insurance provider (or at least a high percentage of the costs). However, the patient will have to show proof that the surgery is necessary and that the problem with the breasts has occurred due to an accident or a disease.
