Breast lift or mastopexy is a procedure done to improve the appearance of sagging breasts. It raises the breasts by removing the excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to give them a more pleasing contour. Keep reading to learn how the breast lift has developed.

Early Techniques

In 1854, there was the first description of breast sagging or mastoptosis by Velapeau. Later, many approaches to correct mastoptosis were developed. Many of them involved the elevation of the breast mound using suspension techniques.

Late Nineteenth Century

Pousson's and Verchere's techniques provided simple solutions for the correction of breast ptosis. The skin superior to the nipple and areola was removed, and then the nipple-areolar complex was elevated during the closure of the incision. After that, inferior incision was used instead.

The First Half of the Twentieth Century

One of most popular techniques was the Biesenberger procedure. It involved excision of the skin of the lateral portion of the breast with superior elevation of the nipple, and then the skin was tightened around the gland to provide a pleasing shape.

Further modifications were done to the early techniques to improve the results while minimizing the resulting scar. Now, there are several techniques that use different types and shapes of incisions. Your doctor will recommend the best according to the degree of your breast sagging.
