If you're having an eyelid lift done, you should know how to prepare. You'll need to follow your surgeon's instructions carefully to avoid any problems and speed up the healing process. The better your physical health is, the faster you'll heal.

Preparations for the Eyelid Lift

Most importantly, try not to smoke for two weeks before the surgery. If you are taking any medications let the surgeon know. You may have to discontinue taking them. You may also be asked not to eat or drink for 12 hours before the surgery, if you will be under anesthesia. Make sure to have a ride home after the eyelid lift procedure, and have someone stay with you the first night home. They can monitor you in case of complications. Plan a few days up to one week off of work. You'll have to limit physical activity for up to two weeks after the procedure.

You'll want to prepare a home care kit, with a few items to help after the surgery. It should contain:

  • Ice pack or bags of tiny frozen veggies, like peas or corn
  • Saline eye drops and antibiotic ointment
  • Washcloth
  • Pain medication (the surgeon may prescribe or recommend this)
  • Thermometer

Plan on taking it easy for the next week. Get in your exercise and make sure to eat healthy in the weeks before the surgery. Being well prepared for an eyelid lift will help you feel more comfortable and assist in the healing process. You won't see real results from the procedure until the bruising and swelling goes down in a few weeks.
