The most common use of Stomach Stapling (gastric bypass surgery) is for weight reduction. Extreme obesity hinders the performance of normal routines and activities. It can also become a life-threatening condition. Because of the extra weight, functions of the body become impaired.

This is a procedure performed only on morbidly obese individuals. This is not for persons desiring to lose less than 100 pounds. To qualify for surgery you must have a clinical diagnosis of extreme or morbid obesity. A BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or above is extreme obesity. You may also qualify if your weight is more than 100 pounds over the ideal weight for your body.

Mobility

If you are morbidly obese, your mobility may be limited. You may have difficulty in performing daily tasks and activities. Your ability to walk may be impaired by the extra weight your body is carrying. If you undergo a stomach stapling procedure, you will experience rapid weight loss. Your ability to perform routine activities and walk will improve through the weight loss.

Improvement of Existing Medical Conditions

There are several medical conditions that could improve through weight loss. These conditions include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Some heart conditions

If your doctor believes your medical condition could improve with stomach stapling, you may qualify with a BMI of 35.
