Potential side effects of a breast lift are minimal these days in the hands of a capable surgeon. However, no surgery is risk-free, and a breast lift is no exception. As with any surgery, the risks should be weighed carefully against the benefits in order to make the best decision possible. Every patient should be their own advocate and approach their doctor with any questions, concerns or doubts before deciding on a breast lift.

General Anesthesia Side Effects

A breast lift can be performed either under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation. Either way, arrangements will need to be made for a ride home, as the patient will not be able to drive. Side effects from general anesthesia in healthy patients are uncommon, but since general anesthesia affects the entire body as opposed to local anesthesia it carries a greater risk. The side effects can include a bad reaction to the medications used, a slow recovery to consciousness and a fluctuation in blood pressure or heart rate, which may trigger a life-threatening situation. However, these instances are rare.

Bruising and Swelling

Most potential side effects of a breast lift are minimal and are easily resolved. Patients may experience bruising and will definitely experience some level of pain. Pain medications are typically prescribed and should be taken on schedule for optimal benefits. Bruising will usually fade in a few days with no residual effects. Additionally, there will be a certain amount of swelling, which is typically controlled with ice packs and rest. These side effects of a breast lift are normal, but if they do not resolve in a reasonable amount of time or the pain is uncontrollable with medication, the doctor should be contacted immediately.

Serious Side Effects

Some women experience a numbing or burning sensation in their nipples after a breast lift. Occasionally the opposite occurs, and there is heightened sensation. There is also a certain amount of scarring to be expected, although in the majority of cases the sensation or numbing will pass over the course of the healing process. Typically, the scars fade over time. If a nerve is severed during surgery, the patient could experience a total loss of sensitivity, although this too is uncommon. There is also the potential for infection, which if unnoticed or untreated can lead to serious complications.

A breast lift is a common procedure these days, and the potential side effects are minimal especially in the care of a capable surgeon. Most side effects are easily resolved, although severe and uncontrolled pain, fever or excessive swelling should be reported to the physician immediately.
