A body lift is an extensive, invasive surgery in which your surgeon will remove excess skin and sometimes excess fat in order to tone and shape your body. Your recovery will be extensive as well. Knowing what to expect can help you recover as comfortably and safely as possible.

Immediately after the Surgery

You will most likely be kept at the clinic immediately following your body lift surgery so that your surgeon can monitor your response to the procedure. At this time, the area(s) of your body on which you had your lift performed will be covered with compression garments that will aim to keep swelling to a minimum. You'll also likely have small tubes running out from your incision areas to help drain excess fluids. You will be asked to rest at the clinic for anywhere between one to three days, with only small occasional walks for physical activity.

Starting immediately after your body lift surgery, you will be put on pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the chance of infection.

Two to Three Weeks after Surgery

You will be asked to stay home from work and regular activities for two to three weeks after body lift surgery, so plan accordingly. Restrictions you'll face during this period include:

  • No strenuous activity or heavy lifting (more than 5 pounds)
  • No smoking or drinking alcohol
  • No bending over excessively
  • No junk food

You will still be on a regimen of pain medications and antibiotics, which you should take according to your physician's instructions. You will still be using compression garments and may have the draining tubes in place. Change your dressings as instructed, which typically means only after showering. You should take small walks (with the assistance of a walker at first), but avoid most other forms of physical activity.
