Sagging skin and excess fat in the neck area can make a person look aged. A Necklift can help get back a youthful appearing neck and help to “set back the clock.” This procedure involves a recovery time.
Recovery after a Necklift
Typically, patients feel groggy and tired after the surgery from the anesthetic. Transportation to home should be arranged ahead of time, and someone should be asked to stay for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. Loose comfortable clothing should be worn and a phone should be kept close.
Mild bruising and swelling is common, along with some numbness in the area of treatment. These symptoms should normally disappear within one week.
Doctors normally want compression garments to be worn to support the neck and to reduce swelling. Most doctors recommend the patient stays in bed for a couple of days with limited movement, especially keeping the head still without moving it from side to side. Head elevation is recommended. It is important to follow the doctor’s suggestions as to the length of time to keep the head elevated.
Normally, the recovery time for a necklift is 1 to 2 weeks, resuming to normal activities not before 3 to 4 weeks. Exercise should be avoided for at least one month, as with exercise, the blood pumps faster. Saunas should also be avoided as the heat dilates the veins. Both of these instances could lead to internal bleeding and the need for a second surgery.
Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 1 month after the procedure. The practitioner will advise when it is the best time to return to work.
Causes for Concern
Unusual bleeding, shortness of breath or any signs of infection should be reported to the doctor immediately, as these could be signals of a serious complication. By taking the body temperature, a patient can assess if the temperature is normal. A fever is usually a sign of infection, as is pus or drainage from the incision site.
Additional Information
If the necklift is an endoscopic necklift, which is done with a small instrument that does not require general anesthesia, the recovery time will be of a shorter duration.
When a patient follows post-operative instructions carefully for a Necklift, the recovery and healing time will be faster.
