Most physicians allow you to return home the day of Lap-Band Surgery, but some may require you to be hospitalizd overnight. It is normal to experience some soreness at the port sight at first, but you can expect to feel well enough to return to work about one week post procedure. Without any complications, a full recovery can be expected in about six weeks.

Post Surgery Nutrition

Before leaving the facility where your Lap-Band surgery was performed, your physician or a dietitian will provide you with nutritional advice regarding what foods to eat, as well as foods and beverages to avoid. Caffeine is not allowed for a few months following surgery and carbonated beverages are not recommended at all, as they can stretch the stomach and cause discomfort. Initially, you start out following an all liquid diet. After three to four weeks, you will be able to have soft foods with a baby food consistency. Semi-solid foods are phased in next, and after about six weeks, "normal" food can be consumed.

It is important to chew food slowly and completely to help digestion. Taking small bites and eating small portions are advised, as the restricted stomach size only holds about 2 ounces of food. Eventually the stomach pouch stretches to allow four to six ounces of food.

Side Effects

You may experience nausea and vomiting, which can also be an indication of an obstruction of the stomach. These side effects can be lessened by eating softer foods that are highly digestible like white meat chicken and pork, or fish. If solid foods do cause nausea and vomiting, you can go back to a liquid diet and then follow the progression to solid foods once again.

Physical and Emotional Needs

Not only should your diet consist of easily digested food, but nutritional foods, too. Your body will need lots of protein (fifty to sixty grams per day) to aid in the healing process and keep you from feeling fatigued. It's beneficial to talk with a behavior therapist or counselor. They can offer emotional support and positive feedback to aid you in attaining your weight loss goal.
