Liposuction is much less invasive than many other plastic surgery procedures, but it still requires a recovery period. Recovery after liposuction is usually shorter and less involved than for a tummy tuck, for example, but it remains important for you to follow your doctor's instructions after the procedure.

Immediately after Liposuction

Depending on how your liposuction procedure has been performed, you may be required to stay in the surgical facility for a short time before being released. This is more common after general anesthesia, as the doctor must monitor your vital signs to look for reaction to the anesthetic. Some liposuction procedures are performed under local anesthesia, and in these cases you will probably be able to go home much more quickly.

You will probably be given pressure garments or bandages to wear over the surgical site. This is to prevent swelling and excess drainage of fluids. These usually remain in place for two days, after which you can remove them to shower. Swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks, but overall discomfort should diminish within the first few days. Be sure to report any unusual symptoms such as swelling or fever to your doctor immediately, since these can be signs of infection.

Later Recovery from Liposuction

After a few days, your pain and discomfort will have diminished greatly. Swelling should be easing off as well, so that you can get a better idea of what your long-term results will be. Although you will look smaller almost immediately, it is best to wait a few weeks before purchasing new clothing. Your body will take some time to settle, and your size may change as healing progresses.

Within a few weeks, you should be able to return to any normal activities, including exercise and strenuous activities, but be sure to consult with your doctor for his recommendations. As with any cosmetic surgery, your results will be better if you closely follow all your doctor's post-operative instructions.
