CNN's Tips for Selecting a Plastic Surgery Doctor
As part of their "Empowered Patient" series, CNN published an article last week providing consumers with five tips for choosing a good doctor for their plastic surgery. (The full article can be accessed here.) Those tips are useful in helping you to remember the risks of plastic surgery and to minimize those risks. You want to get good plastic surgery, not some sort of plastic surgery gone wrong. The main tip that CNN provided that is important to remember is that you should ask a lot of questions of your doctor. That includes making sure that the doctor is board certified and asking if the doctor has hospital privileges. By getting questions like these answered, you will not only make sure to select a good plastic surgeon but you'll also be more confident in having the procedure done. You should also know that you don't have to trust the doctor's word; you can do some checking into his/her background yourself. The article also warns that you should stay away from multiple procedures. Get a little done at a time. There's nothing wrong with moderation. You should ask your doctor about the risks of getting multiple procedures done and what his/her professional opinion is on the matter given your unique set of conditions. You can find a doctor near you by using out online tool located here. photo link

Dolly Parton Quoted on Celebrity Plastic Surgery
The StarPulse News Blog regularly collects quotes from a variety of celebrities. Last week, they included a Dolly Parton quote which reminds us that the woman who has professed a love of plastic surgery over the years isn't going back on what she's said in the past.
"I always say if I, you know, if I see something sagging, dragging or bagging, I'm going to go have it stuffed, tucked or plucked."
This quote sums up the country singer's reasons for enjoying celebrity plastic surgery. She believes that if you don't like something about yourself and you can fix it, you should. Why be unhappy with your body when you can get it repaired and be satisfied with it? If you're interested in Dolly Parton's celebrity plastic surgery, here are a few links that you might enjoy: - Dollymania - Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery - Dolly Parton On-Line Question of the Day: Do you agree or disagree with Dolly's take on plastic surgery? photo link

Celebrity Plastic Surgery Attacked in the Media
Plastic surgery has been on the receiving end of a lot of negative media attention lately. That's due in large part to the fact that the media follows celebrity news trends and the recent tragic death of Kanye West's mother has given rise to new concerns among celebrities about plastic surgery. So it's no surprise that celebrity plastic surgery is taking a bit of a beating in the media. An example of this was seen last week when NJ.com published an article called The Unkindest Cuts. The article discusses some of the celebrities who have gotten bad plastic surgery over the years and uses those examples to condemn the practice of celebrity plastic surgery.
"Senior-citizen hunk Burt Reynolds has had so many lines disappear he looks like a sun-faded photocopy of himself. Character actor Joe Pesci has lost all character; Mickey Rourke looks like a bad statue. And Kenny Rogers is virtually unrecognizable, his features pulled so far back his eyes seem to have vanished."
Perhaps celebrity bad plastic surgery deserves some negative attention. And in fairness, the author makes the interesting point that film actors must be capable of moving their faces completely to convey expression on camera. However, not all plastic surgery is bad plastic surgery. There are plenty of celebrities who get subtle plastic surgery to enhance their appearances. Whether or not people might say that they think celebrities should look natural, isn't it true that we want them to remain young and beautiful? photo link

Stephen King says Celebrity Plastic Surgery shouldn't be News
Stephen King is famous. He's one of the most well-known authors in the nation and is getting a significant amount of attention right now as a result of The Mist. That's why TIME Magazine was interested in doing an interview with him. But in that interview King suggests that there are more important things than hearing the latest news about famous people. Discussing who should be the TIME Magazine person of the year, King says that perhaps it should be Britney Spears. His reasoning is that this would help spark discussion about what is and isn't worthy of headline-making news. He says:
'You know, this morning, the two big stories on CNN are Kanye West's mother, who died, apparently, after having some plastic surgery. The other big thing that's going on is whether or not this cop [Drew Peterson] killed his... wife."
King goes on to point out that there are some serious social and political issues happening in Pakistan and with the Bush administration. His point is that our culture seems to have gotten its priorities mixed up in terms of what's "just gossip" and what's actually news. We think that celebrity gossip, whether its celebrity plastic surgery news or some other celebrity issue, has its place in society. People like to take some downtime to get the goods on celebrities. But King makes some good points in his interview. You can read the complete TIME article here. photo link

Plastic Surgery Part of 40 Surgeries for Injured Solider
Two years ago Ryan Bowen was an Army solider stationed in Baghdad. When a tank blew up, several people around him lost their lives and he almost met the same fate. A series of injuries required immediate medical attention. Those injuries also required ongoing medical attention. Despite the fact that doctors were able to treat Bowen for the immediate life-risking problems, his issues were far from over. He has spent the last two years stationed on an Air Force Base where he has received intermittent treatment for a variety of problems caused by the injury. Among those problems was the psychological disorder PTSD. After two years of treatments for both his physical and psychological difficulties, Bowen is finally starting to see the light. His health issues are mostly cleared away. The most recent of the forty surgeries that he's undergone in the last two years was plastic surgery to remove some of the significant scarring from his face. With a new face and a new outlook on living, he is ready to begin the next phase of his life. Read the full story here. photo link

Is Plastic Surgery in Your Post-Thanksgiving Plans?
Thanksgiving has come and gone. You had planned on eating lightly throughout the holiday but we all know how easy it is to stick to the goal. You consumed more turkey than you thought you would. And then there was the mashed potatoes and the stuffing and the pie ... And the worst part is that you're not even done. You've got leftovers in the fridge and if you're honest with yourself, you're looking forward to them. It's at this time of year that many people start thinking about what they're going to do when the holidays are done. They've started the landslide into gaining end-of-the-year weight. They already know that their plans to skimp on Christmas baked goods are going to go as well as your plan for staying light on the turkey yesterday. Many of them decide to just let themselves go and deal with it later. This is how the New Years' Resolutions about joining a gym and starting a new diet get going. But there are other options. If you've always kind of considered plastic surgery, you might think about waiting until the holidays are over and then treating yourself to a facelift. That's not an excuse for going crazy with the bad diet over the holidays. But it can help you relax and enjoy what's left of the year. Start researching your options now so that you can find a good doctor and make plans for future change. photo link

Plastic Surgery Isn't Always Cosmetic
When we talk about plastic surgery, we normally discuss elective plastic surgery. We gossip about the latest celebrity to get a breast lift. We consider whether or not a tummy tuck would make us feel sexier. We review the options that we have to improve upon bodies which work well but aren't quite exactly what we want. But not all plastic surgery is done for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes, plastic surgery is necessary for reconstructive purposes. This happens when accidents occur and damage is done to the body. A plastic surgeon is enlisted to assist in restoring the body back to the way it looked before the accident took place. Take, for example, a case reported on last week in which a twelve-year-old girl was attacked by a dog. The bites she sustained did significant damage to her lip. A plastic surgeon at the hospital was able to save the child's lips so she'd have both feeling and a normal appearance. Currently, the girl has a scar but additional palstic surgery may be able te make even that blemish disappear. Life has unexpected problems. One day you're at cheerleading practice on your middle school campus and the next you're in the hospital. Plastic surgery can't solve every problem that comes along. But it's good to remember that this type of procedure can do more than just make you pretty; it can make you feel normal again after something awful happens. photo link

People Remain Happy With Plastic Surgery
The plastic surgery community has been taking a beating over the course of the last few weeks. Negative media attention has caused a scare which has people looking at plastic surgery in an unattractive light. But there are two sides to every story. For everyone who says that they're too afraid of plastic surgery risks to undergo the procedures they might desire, there is someone who gets the plastic surgery done and loves it. WTVM News reported last week on the case of one woman who is happy with the work that she's had done. Phoebe Caldwell is not a celebrity, a desperate housewife or a nut job. She's just your average late-middle-aged woman in the Midwest. And she recently had plastic surgery done, much to her happiness. Caldwell had what is unattractively known as a turkey waddle. You know, that skin flapping around on the neck that you try not to think about as it appears in the mirror. She was sick of thinking about it. So she did something. She had it tightened and tuned and is now proud to display her neck to the world. In fact, she enjoys the results of the plastic surgery so much that she's planning to return to the same doctor again for additional work. She wants a little bit of a tummy tuck and some removal of her stretch marks. She's not looking to get anything complicated done. She's just ready for a few minor improvements. The debate about plastic surgery will continue. Some people will always say that it's not something that they would ever get done. But it's a personal choice and there are people who are happy with making it despite swells of negative attention in the air. photo link

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Britney Wants Her Body Back
Being a mother of two doesn't make it easy to have a great body. The baby weight is one thing. But the lifestyle that comes along with being a mother to young children is not at all conducive to weight loss. Add in the fact that you're a celebrity who is currently not drawing much appreciation from many of your old fans and you've got a problem. If your Britney Spears, you realize that one way to solve that problem is to get celebrity plastic surgery. Britney wanted her old body back. And who can blame her? The bad gossip isn't going to end until she gets herself back in pre-baby shape. (Well, that and maybe she could stop running over people's toes.) People want to see her looking sexy. She's not even a middle-aged mama; she's got youth on her side. But she doesn't have the time or energy to get the work done through hard exercise so she decided lipo was a better way to go. Reports on the supposed-to-be-secret celebrity plastic surgery indicate that Britney went to a doctor in Nevada to get the work done on her stomach. Some are saying she got liposuction and others are saying it was the less invasive SmartLipo procedure. The buzz is that she's also not quite done getting work done. In addition to desiring her thinness back, Britney wants to put some bounce back in her breasts. A breast lift or maybe even an augmentation could be in her future. What do you think: Would a better body put Britney back on top? photo link

Remember the Risks of Plastic Surgery
If you follow celebrity plastic surgery news, you know about the tragic death of Donda West. If you've been out of the loop, we'll catch you up briefly: the mother of rap star Kanye West recently died after plastic surgery complications. The exact cause of her death has not been determined. However, this has sparked a backlash against plastic surgery amongst celebrities and the general community. The thing to remember is that when you engage in any kind of surgery, you take a risk. This is true of any type of medical procedure, from going to the dentist to getting your annual mammogram. In most cases, there aren't problems with these procedures. But if you don't follow the right procedures, bad things can (and do) happen. Donda West's death is an example of this. It has been reported that nearly everything was done wrong in this situation as far as basic plastic surgery rules go. One of the major problems in the case seems to be that West didn't select a doctor who was reputable for the procedures that were being performed. Dr. Jan Adams went ahead and performed the plastic surgery after a more reputable doctor had refused to do it because of the health risks. "As it turns out, not only is Dr. Adams not Board Certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery, but he currently has a bevy of open malpractice suits, including allegations of sexual battery and physical assault, DUI convictions and pending disciplinary action from the California Medical Board." (Source). To minimize the risks that are associated with any plastic surgery, the first thing you should do is find a good surgeon. Of course, you'll also have to follow the advice of that doctor. If your plastic surgeon says that the risks are too great, you should skip the surgery. That's how people are kept safe. photo link

Baby Boomers are Surprisingly Optimistic about Plastic Surgery
If someone asked you what the biggest misconceptions are among baby boomers about plastic surgery, you might come up with an interesting array of answers. Most likely, you would assume that the older generation has a number of negative connotations associated with plastic surgery. The basic underlying thought is that although this generation is interested in anti-aging options, they have an unrealistic fear of plastic surgery. You would be wrong. In fact, baby boomers overwhelmingly support plastic surgery. And the misconceptions that they have about it are actually erring on the side of the surgery instead of against it. A recent study of what baby boomers think about plastic surgery found that four of the five biggest misconceptions were basically that they thought surgery would be even better and easier than it really is. The baby boomer generation surveyed tended to think that plastic surgery would come quickly and easily. They assumed that there would be no scarring, that facial surgery would create the perfect face and that the results of the surgery would last for the rest of their lives. They also thought that simple procedures (such as a mini-facelift) would be as effective as more complex procedures (such as the full facelift). Plastic surgery may not be quite as rosy as this generation paints it to be in their minds. But it does have benefits and baby boomers seem eager to take advantage of them. photo link

Is Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation a "Fringe Procedure"?
In a recent report about Laser Vaginal Rejuvation, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons called the procedure "a fringe procedure" which is considered to be "unconventional". Maybe. Maybe not. An increasing number of women are exploring this form of plastic surgery to see what it might offer in improvements to their sex lives. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation is a procedure which essentially tightens the vagina. It improves muscle tone and gives a woman more control of her sex organs during intercourse. By taking this control, she may be able to enhance her own sex life. And if her sex life is improved, the sex life of her partner is likely to improve as well. As a result, it is not just single women looking into this surgery but also a significant number of women who are in committed relationships. The procedure is still considered to be controversial. But that doesn't mean that it can really be called a "fringe procedure". The term implies that it's something which is rarely done or which is only done by a select group of people in society. That isn't the case. Many average women across the nation are considering this type of plastic surgery. It may not be commonplace but it's not fringe either. photo link

It's Easy To Turn Down Celebrity Plastic Surgery at Age 22
Some Hollywood stars love celebrity plastic surgery. They believe that it's the best way to get rid of their flaws and boost their careers. Others are just as adamant that celebrity plastic surgery is not for them (although some of them do it in secret anyway despite what they say to the cameras). But should the ones who aren't doing it really be talking? Case in point: British singer Leona Lewis was recently quoted as saying that she would never even consider plastic surgery because she is one hundred percent happy with every part of her body. Hm. Is there really a woman on the planet who is totally thrilled with every single line and curve? The thing is that Lewis is only 22 years old. And she's got a body that's worth loving. But is she really going to feel that way for the rest of her life? Before we go giving her credit for her commitment to feminism and her outstanding role as a model of self esteem, let's remember the faltering confidence that we had at 22. Today celebrity plastic surgery may be out of the question but tomorrow may be a different story. photo link

Kim Cattrall Admits to Fear of Celebrity Plastic Surgery
In her role as Samantha on Sex and the City, actress Kim Cattrall dealt regularly with the issue of aging. Sometimes her character wanted to age gracefully and accept the flaws of the body that come with getting older. Other times she preferred to take advantage of the options available to her for rejuvenating her body. But what about the woman behind the TV character? Kim Cattrall recently admitted that she's terrified of plastic surgery. Like her television character, she seems a bit divided on the issue. She doesn't want to get surgery done but she readily admits to the fact that she doesn't like the wrinkles that she's starting to see as she gets older. And she confesses that she can understand why celebrity plastic surgery is so popular. For now, the dashing actress is sticking with simpler treatments and life changes to adjust to her changing looks. She's gotten Botox in the past. And recently she renovated her house to remove all of the neon lighting which she felt was unflattering to her older skin. But how long can she continue to make these small adjustments? Only time will tell. photo link

Men Get Great Abs with Plastic Surgery
Men don't like to talk about the fact that they want plastic surgery. Sitting around talking about how you aren't happy with your love handles just isn't a macho thing to do. And when guys do talk about how they need to get in shape, it's via the manly "I need to get to the gym" rather than something along the lines of "I need a tummy tuck". But the truth is that a lot of guys don't like going to the gym. Sure, they want to get rid of the beer belly and have a stomach ladies will want to take tequila shots off of. But they don't actually want to have to do a zillion sit-ups each day to get that kind of body. So instead of dealing with it, they just ignore the issue. It's a hush hush topic, but plastic surgery could be the answer for some of you guys out there. As described recently by Gizmodo, you can get a better body rather rapidly through a form of plastic surgery called "abdominal etching". The fat comes out, the abs get shaped and you've got a six pack on your body while still enjoying the one in your fridge. photo link

Breast Reduction Surgery For Men
When you hear the term "boob job", what image comes to mind? Probably a Penthouse centerfold with perfectly shaped breasts that are clearly too large on her body to have been the ones that she was born with. True enough, but breast augmentation isn't the only kind of breast surgery that is done in plastic surgeons' offices. Breast reductions are common procedures as well. Women with small breasts want to know who would want to get their large ones reduced? Many people do, including large-breasted female celebrities such as Queen Latifah. But it's not just the ladies who are interested in breast reduction; men with breasts often consider this option. Men may grow breasts due to hormonal problems associated with everything from adolescence to medical complications during aging. It's not a pleasant experience for most of them and so they want to know about their options. A "boob job", in this case a male breast reduction, is the most common of those options. NBC30.com recently took a look at the case of a man who underwent this kind of surgery. His breasts began growing at age fourteen, certainly causing him emotional suffering at this sensitive age. That was half a lifetime ago and the man has now successfully reduced the size of his chest thanks to the surgery. Think it's just overweight couch potatoes who have to get this kind of plastic surgery done? Think again; even military men are doing it. photo link

Do You Need a Breast Lift to be a "Yummy Mummy"?
"Yummy mummy" is the term coined to refer to women (particularly English women) who have children and continue to look stunning. Here in the United States, many women find that the Mommy Makeover offered in many plastic surgeons' offices can assist them in getting back their pre-baby shape. Sure, they could go jogging every day with their strollers in tow (and many do so that they can keep up their health as well as their looks) but why over-exert oneself to lose baby fat when you can let a doctor assist you? Weight loss help is one of the most common procedures that are done post-baby. However, another common procedure that many women get after their kids have grown up a little bit is the breast lift. Many women feel that breastfeeding changes the shape of their breasts in a way that they aren't happy with. The breast lift is designed not just to make breasts perkier and rising higher on the chest but also to actually re-shape the breasts to make them more attractive, possibly giving them back the shape they had before the baby began suckling on them. A controversial study done in the UK recently found that there is actually no link between breastfeeding and the change in breast shape. However, many mothers would beg to differ. It is possible that the shape change is due not so much to the breastfeeding as to the weight gain and then loss experienced in the breasts after pregnancy. (After all, just take a look at the cleavage on this recent photo of pregnant actress Halle Berry and you can see that pregnancy boosts the size of the breasts considerably.) In any case, women who want to be "yummy mummies" might ignore the study and go with their instincts instead. photo / clothing link

The Vaginal Orgasm
Women are much more frank today than they used to be in the past. They openly discuss their sexual interests and conquests with each other, with their lovers and with the public at large. But despite this openness, many women are still committing the fraud of faking their orgasms. They feel like they should know their bodies enough to be able to climax when they have sex, so it embarasses them if they don't. Some of these women are turning to G-spot amplification to assist them with the vaginal orgasm. The issue for most of these women is that they have no problem having an orgasm; not exactly anyway. They are able to achieve an orgasm through clitoral stimulation without any difficulty. But they have trouble reaching orgasm during penetration without additional clitoral stimulation. (Read this guest sex column in The Orion to learn more about women with this kind of issue.) Of course, there's nothing wrong with clitoral stimulation. But what if you could have the best of both worlds? You could continue to climax by external stimulation while also honing your sensitivity to achieve vaginal orgasms as well? G-spot amplification offers that option to women. As the name suggests, it increases the size of the G-spot. This means that the woman is more sensitive in that area as well as more capable of figuring out just where that area is. There's no shame in finding different ways to make things work in the bedroom. And it'll give you something new to gossip about over cocktails with the girls. You might even soon be able to tell them that multiple orgasms are no myth either. photo link

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Jane Seymour Breast Augmentation
You probably know her best as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The role hardly casts her as a candidate for celebrity plastic surgery but of course actresses are far more complex than the roles that they play on television. Photographs from Awful Plastic Surgery suggest that Jane Seymour may have recently gotten a breast augmentation (or perhaps just a breast lift). Awful Plastic Surgery asks what the point is of waiting so long to get a breast job done (if indeed that's what Seymour did). This seems to miss the entire point of plastic surgery which is that it can make you feel better about your appearance at any age. Sure, some people do it for others, especially in the Hollywood television industry. However, plastic surgery can also be something that you do for yourself. Perhaps Seymour thought that revamping her image with a little bit of busty youthfulness would give her a leg up on the reality TV competition Dancing with the Stars. Or maybe she was simply ready for a little bit of a change. The actress is pushing close to the minimum age requirements for a reverse mortgage loan and might be thinking that it's time to give a little boost to her beauty. If it makes her enjoy her stardom a little bit more (and offers some benefit to the television viewers at the same time), good for her. photo link

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Lindsay Lohan's Lips
It seems like many celebrities do things in groups. A weight loss fad starts making the rounds and everyone on the A-list has tried it. A new wellness therapy treatment is announced and all of the older gals on the red carpet are touting its wonders (or at least trying it in secret). And different platsic surgery treatments are much the same way. From LipoDissolve to lipo itself, the celebrities always seem to band together in silent support of the same surgeries. So, it's probably no surprise that lip augmentation is a big thing right now. It isn't the first time that it's gotten the attention of the celebrities. When Angelina's big lips started attracting all of the attention from male viewers and celebrities alike, a number of stars rushed out to get their lips done either with collagen injections or surgical augmentation. But at that time, the results were mostly pretty. The trend that's hitting the spotlight these days is for celebrities to attempt lip augmentation and get not-so-great results. A few weeks ago, it was Britney who took media flak for her puffy-not-pouty lips. And now GlossLip reports that Lindsay Lohan has followed suit. The report also mentions that Lindsay's sunless tanning attempts were none too good either. It's difficult to say whether these girls are really getting bad lip work done. After all, your lips don't come out looking perfect immediately after you leave the doctor's office. As with all forms of surgery, lip augmentation requires a small amount of healing time. So if these pictures are being snapped too soon after the procedures are being dnoe, it's no wonder that they don't look up to par. But if it's really a trend to be getting bad lip augmentation then it'll be interesting to see who is next on the lips of the tabloid list. photo link

90% of Patients say Tummy Tuck was "worth it"
There's a website which provides consumer opinions about all different types of plastic surgery and rejuvenation treatments. One of the things that it does is polls people who have had various kinds of surgeries to see if they thought that the results were worth the cost (and sometimes pain) of the procedure. According to the site, people generally do believe that their treatments are worth it. But the one surgery that was most well-loved by those who had it was the "tummy tuck". According to the site, 87% of people said that they were happy with their tummy tuck after it had been done. That means that nearly nine out of ten people who have had a tummy tuck are likely to report that they feel the benefits outweighed the costs. Those benefits include reduced weight, improved self-esteem and a better general appearance. The tummy tuck is designed for people who are of average weight but whose weight is concentrated in the belly. The procedure decreases the fat in that area to improve the overall appearance and shape of the body. What do you think? Out of all of the plastic surgery treatments that you've had done, which do you think was most worth it? photo link

How to Pay for Plastic Surgery?
You've decided that you want to get plastic surgery. However, you're not quite sure how you are going to afford to get the treatments that you desire. Although plastic surgery prices have been decreasing regularly to make the practice more affordable, these procedures can still be costly. Here are some tips to help you pay for plastic surgery: o Save up. Many people are able to start saving in advance of the surgery so that they can afford to pay for plastic surgery up front. o Get a cosmetic surgery loan. You can get loans from your bank and other lenders specifically for financing your plastic surgery. You should look for a low-interest loan and create a budget for paying it back. o Get a package deal. If you know that you're going to want a significant amount of plastic surgery work done, you can work with your plastic surgeon to create a package deal that will discount some of the procedure. o Ask your plastic surgery doctor about payment plans. Some doctors will allow you to use payment plans so that you can get your procedure without paying all of the costs up front. o Go local. Many people head to hot spots like Los Angeles to get their plastic surgery. You don't need celebrity plastic surgery to get a good look. Work with local doctors to reduce your costs. o Have a plastic surgery party. Just like people have baby showers and wedding announcement parties, you can offset some of your costs by throwing a party for yourself and having friends gift you with the procedure. If you budget your money and work out a plan for payment, you should be able to afford the surgery that you want. photo link
