Body Contouring Risks Greater For Obese People
Patients who are interested in getting body contouring plastic surgery are typically patients who are overweight. After all, you don't want to get your body shaped to be slimmer if you're already achingly thin. But
studies indicate that a higher body mass index means a greater risk when getting body contouring surgery. This means that the procedure could be especially risky for those patients who are truly obese.
In addition to the fact that there was a greater risk of complications in more obese patients, the study found that there were also generally poorer results for the surgery when performed on these patients. This suggests that patients seeking this type of surgery may want to consider weight loss surgery prior to body contouring plastic surgery.
Question of the Day: What is the ideal weight of a patient interested in getting successful low-risk body contouring plastic surgery?

Warrant Issued for Plastic Surgery Scam Doctor
There has recently been an
arrest warrant issued for a doctor in France who has been accused of providing bad plastic surgery to nearly one hundred different people. The problem wasn't just that this doctor was bad at his job. The problem was that he really didn't know what he was doing and ended up causing his patients serious pain by doing things such as giving them breast implants using only a basic local anesthetic. The doctor is facing arrest and has fled the country so a European arrest warrant has been issued.
This is a reminder about just how important it is to review the history and experience of the plastic surgeon that you choose for your procedure. You want to make sure that you have asked for references, seen patients who are pleased with the doctor and that you aren't just relying on the doctor's own claims that he is a good plastic surgeon before getting the work done. Doing your research can save you a lot of pain and trouble!
Question of the Day: What should be done to a plastic surgeon who provides bad / painful treatments?

Woman Steals Credit Card to Pay for Plastic Surgery
There is no denying that plastic surgery procedures are expensive. The most
popular plastic surgery procedures involve multiple areas of work which can add up to quite the pretty penny. For example, one highly popular procedure is the "Mommy Makeover" which is designed to give a complete overhaul to the body of new mothers who want to get their old looks back.
The Mommy Makeover includes a series of different plastic surgery procedures to achieve this goal.
Liposuction and / or a tummy tuck is typically used to get rid of the fat left over from the pregnancy. A
breast lift (and possibly an augmentation) is needed to get the shape of the boobs back. And other procedures may be done if changes have occurred to the face or other parts of the body. This adds up to a plastic surgery price tag of anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000.
One woman really wanted to get this type of plastic surgery work done but didn't have the money to pay for it. She did qualify for $12000 of financing but she wanted more plastic surgery than that would pay for. So she
stole someone else's credit card in order to fund the procedure. At least she'll go to jail looking her best!
Question of the Day: What could make a woman steal money in order to get plastic surgery?

Your Plastic Surgeon Is Likely to Be Young
There is a
trend in the world of medicine today in terms of the fields of medicine that newly graduated doctors are going into. More and more new medical grads are eschewing the option of going into general practice and are instead looking into specialty areas of medicine, areas such as plastic surgery. This means that there are an influx of new young doctors into these specialty fields and ultimately that means that your chances of getting a younger plastic surgeon could be greater now than in the past.
There are both pros and cons to getting a younger plastic surgeon. Of course, you want someone who has experience in the procedures that you are getting done but experience alone doesn't mean that someone is a good doctor. Younger doctors may be more on top of the latest methods of plastic surgery treatment and can provide a great perspective on modern plastic surgery for you.
In other words, there may be an increase in the number of younger plastic surgeons out there but this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. You want to make sure only that you have checked the background of the plastic surgeon and that you have developed a good rapport with him in order to make sure that you are getting the treatment that you desire from him no matter what his age may be.
Question of the Day: Would it bother you to have a young plastic surgeon?

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Alice Cooper
Sixty-year-old music legend Alice Cooper is one celebrity who is never going to be getting plastic surgery. It's not because he's never thought about it. In fact, there once was a time when Alice Cooper was seriously considering getting a
nose job. But there is a good reason that he has decided not to get plastic surgery - his wife
told him he couldn't!
Alice Cooper's wife used an interesting line of reasoning. She said that Cooper's nose is a nose that has a lot of history. It's a famous nose that's been photographed a million times. And she thinks that it should stay just the way it is. Cooper says that he doesn't mind being banned from getting plastic surgery since he thinks his wife is probably right about his nose having history. He also says that he's a bit afraid of the surgery.
Question of the Day: Should a spouse ban you from getting plastic surgery?

Breast Reduction Patients Going Outpatient
A study of
breast reduction patients in Southern California shows that an increasign number of these patients are interested in getting their
plastic surgery done through an outpatient medical setting rather than having it done in a traditional hospital setting.
There are several reasons cited for this growing interest in outpatient plastic surgery. Some of those reasons include:
- Increased safety of the outpatient setting for the plastic surgery procedures due to a tightening of the rules and regulations of this type of procedure.
- The outpatient setting is more affordable to the patient than is the cost of getting the breast reduction surgery done in a hospital.
- There tends to be a higher level of privacy for the patient in the outpatient setting than there is for the patient who is getting breast reduction surgery in a hospital.
Additional information about this trend can be explored
here.
Question of the Day: Why are breast reduction patients showing a preference for outpatient settings?

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Madonna
If you read celebrity gossip news and celebrity plastic surgery news, then you probably already know that there is one celebrity that has been attacked with rumors about plastic surgery more than the rest of them have this year. Madonna, who long insisted that she didn't have to do anything but eat right and exercise to maintain her natural good looks has been the woman at the center of numerous plastic surgery rumors in 2008.
Very few of the reports actually seem to have any inside information on whether or not Madonna is getting plastic surgery done or what procedures she's using.
Some say that she's sticking to just dermal fillers and other non-invasive procedures to enhance the areas of her body that have always looked great (such as her cheeks and cheekbones). Others say that she's getting more invasive surgery done. Still others say to leave her alone; she just doesn't look quite the same right now because she's going through a tough time.
Question of the Day: What do you think - is Madonna getting plastic surgery?

Teen Plastic Surgery On The Rise
Plastic surgery procedures have been on the rise among the general public due to increased availability, lowered costs, more awareness of the types of procedures available and a generally higher acceptance level for getting cosmetic work done. The growth of interest in plastic surgery is not just among older people seeking to return their appearance to how it looked in their younger days; there are also a significantly larger number of teens getting plastic surgery than in the past.
"Among teens 18 and younger, the number of plastic surgery procedures has increased from 59,890 in 1997 to more than 205,119 in 2007, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery." (source)
The most popular plastic surgery procedure among teens was otoplasty which is a reshaping of the year. Breast augmentations were also not uncommon among teens. There are a variety of different procedures done on people below the age of eighteen (with parental consent). The bulk of these are done for the purpose of fitting in with peers.
Question of the Day: Is it good or bad that plastic surgery has increased among teens?

Unemployment Drives Up Plastic Surgery Rates
You would think that the average person who comes in to a doctor's office to get plastic surgery is someone with a relatively good job and a decent income, right? If so, you would probably be surprised to find out that a number of the new patients that plastic surgeons are seeing today are actually people who are
unemployed.
The change in the economy has caused a number of people to face unemployment after years of working at a good job. These people are out there on the job hunt when they didn't expect to be. And they want to be out there looking their best because they know that it's a competitive time right now and people who are in tip top shape are going to fare better in the professional world.
With some money in their savings accounts and the time available to go to the
plastic surgeon, a large percentage of newly unemployed people are getting cosmetic work done that they may have thought about in the past but didn't have the time or motivation to get done. Times they are a'changin!
Question of the Day: What percentage of plastic surgery patients are unemployed?

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Alicia Douvall
You may not know
Alicia Douvall because she's not the most famous celebrity. She is a UK television actress who has appeared on a series of different shows. What you may know her from is her plastic surgery news because this is a woman who has gotten more than one dozen operations on her breasts in an effort to make them look perfect.
Reports earlier this month indicate that Douvall is set to get her fourteenth breast surgery procedure. Douvall says that she is unsatisfied with the results of her thirteenth breast implant procedure and therefore wants to correct them.
The majority of plastic surgeons would think twice about giving so many breast augmentations to one patient. There is always the concern that the patient's body image and expectations are unrealistic. However, Douvall appears to have found a plastic surgeon who is willing to go the distance with her.
Question of the Day: Is it unhealthy to get more than one dozen breast augmentation procedures like actress Alicia Douvall has done?

Nutritional Health Important for Plastic Surgery Patients
A plastic surgeon is not a doctor who specifically takes care to focus on the nutritional health of the patient. After all, this is a cosmetic procedure that is being done, not a medical one. However, it is always important for any doctor to be aware of the medical issues of their patients.
Plastic surgeons do this in terms of assessing whether or not the patient is healthy enough to get a plastic surgery procedure done. There is a
new study that suggests that plastic surgeons should also be aware of the post-surgery nutrition of their patients in regards to some plastic surgery procedures.
The study explored the health of patients who got body contouring procedures after doing bariatric weight loss surgery. The indication was that these patients suffer from a lack of nutritional health which can increase the recovery time of these procedures. More research is necessary to determine what the role of plasic surgeons is in regards to this issue.
Question of the Day: How should plastic surgeons attend to the care of a patient's medical health?

Breast Reductions Found Safe for Obese Women
Women who are morbidly obese are women who may be interested in a variety of different plastic surgery procedures. Although the ones that first come to mind are weight loss surgeries and slimming surgeries such as lipsuction, the truth is that there are a lot of obese women who are highly interested in breast reduction surgeries.
In the past, it has been believed that the risk of the breast reduction surgery was higher for morbidly obese women than for slimmer women. However, a new study of this topic indicates that the previous beliefs about that were probably not true. The study suggests that it is safe for women with obesity issues to safely get a breast reduction.
This information comes from new news recently released from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Learn more

Question of the Day: Is it as safe for obese women to get breast reductions as it is for slimmer women?

Stem Cells From Lipo Could Be Useful in Plastic Surgery
One of the most commonly requested plastic surgery procedures today is
liposuction. People want to be thin and they particularly want to get rid of their belly fat. However a new study shows that there may be a better reason that just looks to take out that belly fat - the reason is that it could potentially be used to improve plastic surgery results on other parts of the body.
The study has found that there are considerably more adult stem cells in the fat suctioned out of the belly than there are in other parts of the body. These stem cells can be used for improving various types of plastic surgery such as breast reconstruction and augmentation. These stem cells are also useful in the treatment of non-cosmetic issues such as diabetes.
The study is an early study which means that it is not likely that these results will be implemented in medical procedures any time soon. But it's good to know that the fat we don't want on our bellies can be removed and possibly used elsewhere to the benefit of ourselves or others!

Special Paper Could Be Useful to Reconstructive Surgeons Working with Burn Patients
There is an interesting set of articles that has recently been published which focuses on a niche aspect of medicine that could be important to some plastic surgeons. This is a set of articles published in the July Journal of Craniofacial Surgery which offers an in-depth exploration of the treatment of children who have suffered from burn injuries.
Most plastic surgeons do a combination of cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Burns are a common reason to require reconstructive surgery. And children are often victims of burn injuries. As a result, this set of articles could be highly useful to a specialized set of plastic surgeons that are working to repair the physical damage done to children who are victims of burn accidents.

3-Tiered Plastic Surgery Approach Improves African American Nose Jobs
There are people from all different ethnic backgrounds who may take an interest in
rhinoplasty since the nose job surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery requests. However, the method of completing this plastic surgery has typically favored Caucasian features which has left many people of different ethnicities disappointed with the results of their rhinoplasty.
A
new approach is being suggested which is believed to improve the results of the nose job for African Americans and perhaps people of other backgrounds. It is a three-tiered approach that does the following:
- Increases dorsal height.
- Decreases nasal flare.
- Refines the tip and projection of the nose.
These three tiers are approached with a goal of maintaining the facial features that are distinct to the ethnic background of the patient. Thus far reports indicate that the approach is successful in being satisfactory to the patient and even raising the self-esteem of the patient once complete.
Question of the Day: Should African American and Caucasian nose jobs be treated differently?

Reconstructive Breast Augmentation and Mental Health
The
NHS is the publicly-funded health care system in the UK. One of the things that you can have done through NHS medical care is a breast augmentation - however, the circumstances in which this would be allowed are limited.
The NHS has provisions to cover the reconstructive breast augmentation of certain women who have lost their breasts due to cancer treatment. However, these women have to show that the loss of their breasts is a mental health issue which is causing them serious psychosocial distress.
At the current time, the NHS
does not have clear guidelines as to who specifically qualifies for this type of medical care. That is because research has been unclear about which types of patients benefit psychologically from post-cancer reconstructive breast augmentation. This raises the question of whether the mental health of most women are seriously affected after the loss or partial loss of the breasts due to cancer treatment.
Question of the Day: Do women suffer from serious mental health problems if they fail to get reconstructive breast surgery following the loss of breasts to cancer?

Popular Plastic Surgery Show Comes to an End
One of the most popular television shows ever to focus specifically on the world of plastic surgery is going to be coming to its inevitable end after it reaches one hundred episodes on the year. That's right. FX
has announced that Nip/Tuck is slated to finish out a few more rounds of drama and then to be ended in 2011.
Nip/Tuck is an interesting show in terms of the plastic surgery portion of it. The majority of the show centers around the drama unfolding between the plastic surgeons and their families. However, each show does feature some sort of plastic surgery topic. In many cases, the topics are outrageous. However, the show has arguably brought some of the hottest topics in plastic surgery to the table for more mainstream discussion.
No one would argue that Nip/Tuck shows the reality of plastic surgery. It's designed to be a drama. But it also doesn't shy away from the issues that are of interest to plastic surgeons and their patients. It's been a great addition to the FX lineup for several years and it will be interesting to see what plastic surgery topics it tackles before coming to its conclusion.
Question of the Day: How has Nip/Tuck brought plastic surgery to the mainstream TV-viewing audience?

Temporary Tattoos Cover Tummy Tuck Scars
When you first get a tummy tuck, you may be shocked to find that there is some abdominal scarring that remains after the surgery. This can generally be surgically repaired down the line but for someone who just got a flat new tummy to show off, the thought of having to hide it for awhile because of the scar is more than a little bit frustrating.
For those women who want to immediately show off the results of their
tummy tuck, there is a new product designed to temporarily hide the scarring. It's called ScarArt and it's a temporary tattoo that is designed in a unique manner to make it specifically suitable for covering up scars on the abdomen.
The ScarArt lasts for one to three days. It is a simple adhesive which is easy to apply. Being waterproof and smudge-proof, it should last in any sort of conditions where you might want to take your new tummy. The details about the product are available
here.

NY Opens First Vaginal Strengthening Spa
There are many different plastic surgery procedures that have been growing in popularity in recent years but some get talked about more than others. One of the areas of plastic surgery that the mainstream media has often strayed away from talking about too much is the area of
vaginal rejuvenation. Despite the fact that people aren't talking about it too much, this is something that is regularly being done.
There are several different procedures that may be a part of the plastic surgery for the vagina. A majority of them are designed to tighten up the walls of the vagina in order to allow for greater sexual pleasure for the woman, her partner or both.
G-spot amplification and
laser vaginal rejuvenation are two examples of common treatments.
In the world of plastic surgery, procedures are loosely divided into those which are invasive and those which are non-invasive with some people preferring the non-invasive types of procedures despite the fact that the effects are not as long-lasting. For example, people who might otherwise get a face lift to smooth wrinkles and reduce the appearance of aging are now opting to get non-invasive Botox injections instead.
In regards to the growing interest that people have in vaginal plastic surgery, a new non-invasive alternative may be emerging. Believe it or not, a new "
vagina spa" has just opened up in New York. The goal of this spa is to offer women who have basically healthy gentials the chance to learn how to tone them and improve their muscles in order to obtain enhanced sexual pleasure.
Question of the Day: Would you be interested in non-invasive alternatives to vaginal plastic surgery?

Increase in Number of Psych Patients with Plastic Surgery Issues
A newspaper from Australia
has reported that the country is seeing a significant rise in the number of psychiatric patients who come to them after unsuccessful plastic surgery procedures. These patients are people who suffer from body image issues and who attempt to use plastic surgery to reduce their fears of inadequacy related to these issues. The problem is a psychological one which can not be cured by plastic surgery; the fact that the plastic surgery doesn't resolve the issues causes these people additional psychiatric stress and seems to be landing more and more of them in the hospital.
A
good plastic surgeon will make sure to carefully interview patients prior to doing any plastic surgery procedures on them. Part of this interview is designed to give the doctor some insight into the patient's mental stability. It is important for the patient to have realistic expectations of what the plastic surgery results will be like as well as to have a generally good sense of body image. Failure to achieve that in advance of the procedure can result in dissatisfaction with the plastic surgery.
Question of the Day: What can plastic surgeons do to reduce the number of people who are dissatisfied with plastic surgery due to poor expectations about the results?

Problems with Plastic Surgery Tourism
One of the trends that we have seen taking place in the global environment in regards to plastic surgery is the trend towards medical tourism. People from America head to developing countries with big medical communities to get inexpensive plastic surgery procedures. People from Australia cross the waters to America to do the same thing.
It is commonly known that there are some risks involved when going overseas to get plastic surgery. This has caused the topic of plastic surgery tourism to spark big debates. Some countries have tried to put a hold on the number of international procedures that take place. But despite these concerns, most people don't actually understand the risks involved in leaving your home country to get plastic surgery.
The Washington Post has a story this week that details the serious risks and complications that are involved in getting plastic surgery in a foreign country. They point out worst case scenarios which can include botched procedures, bad drugs and inadequate medical service. This is something that's important to read if you're even remotely considering getting plastic surgery anywhere besides near your home.
Question of the Day: What are the risks of plastic surgery tourism for the patient and for the industry as a whole?

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Sara Gilbert
Sara Gilbert is an actress who has done a series of work but who remains most famous for her role as Darlene on the old show Roseanne. One of the things that she has been recognized for since her time on that show is the fact that she's a down-to-earth actress. But that doesn't mean that she doesn't have her insecurities or things about herself that she would like to change.
Awful Plastic Surgery has suggested that Sara Gilbert has gotten at least one and possibly more than one plastic surgery procedure over the years for the purpose of slimming down her nose and giving a different appearance to the shape of her face. Whether or not Gilbert really did get rhinoplasty done is unconfirmed.
It's difficult for some people to reconcile the idea of plastic surgery with the idea of a celebrity being down-to-earth. However, plastic surgery doesn't necessarily imply that someone is superficial or excessively concerned about appearances. This is something that the average person can do well to keep in mind.
Question of the Day: Has Sara Gilbert had celebrity plastic surgery to improve the shape of her nose?

Women Who Get Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy Are Happy
New research indicates that nearly all of the women who opt to get breast reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy are pleased with the decision to do so. Low complication rates and excellent cosmetic results combine together to make it so that 98% of women who have had this done say that it's something they would choose to do again in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the number of women who actually get this procedure done is lower than it could be.
The new research shows that the choice to get reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy is one that overwhelmingly pleases the patients who do this. However, research
earlier this year indicated that two thirds of women who are facing surgery for breast cancer are not going to discuss the issue of reconstructive breast surgery with their doctors. This means that about 66% of women who might be pleased with the results of reconstructive breast surgery are not even considering this option.
Question of the Day: Should doctors encourage patients to get reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy since the results of this surgery are so successful?

Brigitte Nielsen Plastic Surgery Show Launched
Last month
we reported on the fact that actress Brigitte Nielsen was going to be putting herself back in the spotlight by getting very public plastic surgery on a German reality television show. The show faced some serious controversy from people who don't believe that this type of plastic surgery should be shown on television but it
aired yesterday to a moderate-sized crowd of viewers.
Nielsen is planning on getting a significant amount of plastic surgery done for the show. The initial episode focused heavily on the work that she plans to have done to her breasts but she'll be getting everything from cosmetic dentistry to lots of lipo. There are wild rumors going around that include such things as that some of the fat liposuctioned off of her body during the show will be made available at auction.

Celebrity Plastic Surgery: Corey Feldman
You remember
Corey Feldman as the child actor from movies like Stand By Me and The Goonies. You may also know him from more current appearances on a reality TV show about his life. If you know about the latter, then you probably already know that plastic surgery has played an important role in Feldman's life recently.
The first important appearance of plastic surgery in the life of this actor was the breast augmentation that his wife decided to get in order to boost her appearance. They were both so pleased with the results of the plastic surgery that they decided that more cosmetic work could be a good idea.
Both Corey Feldman and his wife have now gone forward with additional celebrity
plastic surgery in the form of liposuction to get rid of their excess fat and further improve the way that they look. Learn more

Avoid 4th of July Plastic Surgery
The 4th of July holiday is coming up and that means that a lot of people are going to be out there playing with fireworks. That may be fun but it also comes with some risks. A
warning has even been issued by a health panel reminding people of the dangers of playing with fireworks.
The biggest problems that arise with fireworkds are burns and injuries to the body related to explosions close to people. These accidents often cause the need for cosmetic surgery or reconstructive surgery. This isn't the type of plastic surgery that you want to be getting if it can be avoided so you'll want to take care with fireworks this year.
Reconstructive surgery and cosmetic medicines can do wonders to repair the body when it has been harmed in accidents such as those involving fireworks. Nevertheless, it makes a lot more sense to be careful than to require treatment for an accident. Remember that this year and take care when enjoying the holiday.
Question of the Day: What protective measures should we take on 4th of July to avoid the need for reconstructive surgery?
