New research indicates that nearly all of the women who opt to get breast reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy are pleased with the decision to do so. Low complication rates and excellent cosmetic results combine together to make it so that 98% of women who have had this done say that it's something they would choose to do again in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the number of women who actually get this procedure done is lower than it could be.
The new research shows that the choice to get reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy is one that overwhelmingly pleases the patients who do this. However, research earlier this year indicated that two thirds of women who are facing surgery for breast cancer are not going to discuss the issue of reconstructive breast surgery with their doctors. This means that about 66% of women who might be pleased with the results of reconstructive breast surgery are not even considering this option.
Question of the Day: Should doctors encourage patients to get reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy since the results of this surgery are so successful?
