When you are reading stories about plastic surgery, do you ever find yourself drawn to the stories about plastic surgery gone wrong? Most people would prefer to read a story about awful plastic surgery than to read information about the basic procedures that are done which almost always go smoothly. Why is that?
Awful plastic surgery interests people for a few reasons including:
- It's interesting in a creepy kind of way. It's the same kind of thing as why we look at car wrecks when we pass them. They are horrifyingly interesting.
- It allows us to admit our fears. Most people are at least a little bit afraid of going to the doctor and being able to say, "look at this thing that happened when someone got plastic surgery" allows us to openly discuss those fears without having to just come right out and say "I'm afraid".
- These stories are often about celebrities and we like any story that reminds us that celebrities are humans, too.
Of course, there are other reasons that we would rather read about awful plastic surgery than normal plastic surgery not the least of which is the fact that normal stories are a little dry because they just tell you how to get procedures done and don't have a lot of personal detail to them.
Question of the Day: Why do we like awful plastic surgery stories?
