Breaking Down the Barriers

Cosmetic surgery amongst African Americans seems to have been quite taboo. The notion of beautifying, sexifying and enhancing ones looks may have been seen as a negative trait in the community. However in recent years, plastic surgery, more specifically rhinoplasty, has become considerably more common and openly discussed. Some credit the rise in rhinoplasty to prominent African American entertainers getting the procedure done and widely publicizing their adoration for a newly refined nose. Also, the buzz in Hollywood adds to the hype and newfound affection for sexing up your body.

This has coincided with the booming plastic surgery industry worldwide, the last decade has brought about a significant rise in popularity, success and notoriety for cosmetic enhancements. Even today, in a struggling economy people are still saving their pennies for that extra nip or lift. So it's great to see stereotypes being broken down and people jumping on board the plastic bandwagon.
