Women with breast implants are being encouraged to undergo further screening methods besides the usual mammogram. In the true spirit of Breast Cancer Awarness Month, reports are being released to promote extra preventive screening methods. Physicians say that women with breast implants should go beyond the yearly mammography and self-checks because oncologists may be finding tumors hidden beneath the implants. There is a slight risk with missing such tumors.
“Breast implants make it more difficult to detect breast cancer on a mammogram because the implants can hide some breast tissue and block the image of a tumor. Because of this, standard techniques used in mammography for compression of the breast and imaging are not as effective for women with breast implants and additional screening tools, such as MRI and ultrasound are recommended.”
The study is hoping to promulgate caution and preventive measures for all women who have implants. It is important to be confident about the risks involved with the procedure, and the signs of breast cancer.
