Eyelid Surgery Craze

Whether it’s a matter of Westernization or beauty enhancement, Asian Blepharoplasty has plastic surgeons seeing double. The craze from Asian countries has hit the US by storm. Asian communities young and old, from across the Pacific and within the states are getting the eyelid widening procedure done by the dozens. Blepharoplasty is becoming to the new lucrative practice for many plastic surgeons. It is estimated to cost over $6,000.

The controversial surgery has gained rapid popularity among the Asian community. In fact not just in the US, 1 in 10 Korean adults get the eyelid surgery, and for the past decade double-eyelid surgery has been the most sought after cosmetic enhancement among Asian women in America and Asia. According the Orange County Register’s report about Blepharoplasty,

“From 2004 to 2006 the numbers jumped by about 40 percent, to an average of about 305,000 procedures a year.”

With the increase in numbers comes the added pressure by peers, family and friends for younger Asians to succumb to the craze. “It is not uncommon to hear in the Asian American community about a friend, or a friend's friend, who was offered by her parents or relatives to have the surgery performed as a coming of age present.” The report also says that it’s not uncommon to see parents pushing for surgeons to perform the surgery on their tiny tots. But is this becoming an epidemic? Some people in the Asian Community believe the pressure is insurmountable to overcome; boys and girls alike feel the constant need to look “more westernized” or have larger eyes (which in many Asian cultures is seen as a symbol of beauty). Regardless of their intentions and purpose, patients are flocking for this new trend.
