What are some Myths about Breast Augmentation?
It is a myth that it is difficult to detect an implant in women with a heavy layer of breast
tissue. However, it is a truth that any implant can ripple or wrinkle, although many women
will not deal with this side effect; it is more common with saline and textured implants. This
can be alleviated by discussing with your doctor about the look you sek to achieve.
It is false that all implants harden over time. There are some that develop capsular contracture once
the implant has been placed. When scar tissue builds up over time, it is possible that the scar tissue
will need to be released from the implant, or the implant be completely removed. This may cause pain or
discomfort, but it does not prove that all implants harden over time.
It is true that implants can move out of position. Symmastia is a condition where implants may come
together and have the appearance of one large breast, although rare, it is a reality. Experienced surgeons
can easily remedy this if it was to happen.
Another fallacy is that implants are a cause for breast cancer, or any other cancer for that matter. There
are numerous sources, including The FDA Breast Implant Consumer Handbook 2004 that discredit the links
between disease states and silicone breast implants in women. It has not been proven that silicone implants
increase the risks of any type of cancer or autoimmune diseases.
