Does plastic surgery help self esteem?

Plastic surgery brings happiness to those who are in need of both emotional and physical change. The specialization is in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, bringing normalcy to something that may not traditionally viewed as beautiful. It has the ability to give one's body an element of beauty. Regardless of emotional and psychological state, it has the ability to heal and help people move on.

Cruelty facing children today can be emotionally traumatizing- it affects one's perception of themselves, thereby affecting how the poise themselves to the outside world. Many children do not see the what they physically understand about themselves, they tend to see what children have been saying about them. It is a hard road to go down, but children and many adults go down this road daily. It is plastic surgery that aids in one's emotional development of acceptance of themselves and this sometimes can be the most important thing in childhood.

Plastic surgery helps people rid themselves of the one thing that they despised about themselves. Whether it is the last ten pounds they cannot seem to take off themselves or a chemical peel to rid themselves of the years of acne they endured- it can all be fixed. If one is unhappy with the way they look, they many times project it outwardly. It can be negative body language or some other form of communication, verbal or not. Plastic surgery is widely gaining acceptance as a method to rid simple self esteem issues and help people gain acceptance not just of themselves, but of others as well.

The older generation is also taking note of the psychological implication plastic surgery has on them. It can make them feel a good ten years younger, with the perceived energy and endurance they had when they felt as good as they looked. It is such a psychological boost for many patients, that it is clearly underestimated and under appreciated. Many doctors are sympathetic to an elderly person's request for plastic surgery as long as they have realistic expectations of the surgery. It can be so spiritually uplifting for many to have just a bit of liposuction, or a middle facelift- to take the years off their psyche.

The thought that attractiveness is a bridge to social acceptance is widely quoted and viewed as a true thought. In this mode of thinking, people with natural features many times feel that they are not as "attractive", and that they may be missing out on life. It is difficult when someone has a slight bump on their nose and feels that it is holding them back from living the life they want to live- if a surgery can fix that, why not? The problem arises when a surgeon is faced with a patient who wants something fixed immediately after one surgery is done, the question should be posed: does this patient suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

Another beauty of plastic surgery is that it can fix what we naturally may not be able to. In an age of health consciousness and exercise, it is easy to grow old gracefully. Many people who work hard, eat well, and don't abuse their bodies, still may have self esteem issues that only a nip here and a tuck there might help. Today the fact is that plastic surgery can achieve what years of exercise have not, it makes a tremendous difference in how people are viewing themselves.

The number of procedures is increasing daily with a new found answer to a happier and healthier life. It can no longer be seen as a vanity surgery, but as a method to bring someone emotional pleasure and self confidence. The benefits of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery prove to outweigh the risks. Plastic surgery is known to benefit the patient not only physically, but emotionally and psychologically. Fortunately, an answer has been found to such unhappiness that one may feel when looking in the mirror. Plastic surgery is an option to feel good again. It is an option that can benefit one for an entire lifetime.
