What are the uses for cosmetic surgery, and how does one know if it's right for them?
Society puts a great deal of importance on image, and cosmetic surgery is revered above that
which may be used in treating the sick and infirm. Cosmetic surgery has become a tool for use
beyond the cure of bodily ills, reshaping the body to change external appearance, in turn
transforming the emotional health as well. What are the uses for cosmetic surgery, and how
does one know if it's right for them?
Cosmetic surgery is sometimes used on those who either have been born with gross physical
defects, or individuals who have been horribly disfigured in accidents. While for some people
a reconstructive operation may not be necessary to the essential functioning of their bodies,
it may be very important for their psychological well-being. Operations aimed at appeasing
physical defects may free the mind of a perceived status, allowing society to let them lead
a social and emotional life.
The advent of plastic surgery began a process to develop reconstructive procedures that can
treat physical or medical ailments. Breast reduction surgery, for example, may eliminate
chronic back pain allowing an individual to lead a more active life. People suffering from
extreme obesity may require gastric bypass operations to help make them more mobile and
better able to handle a traditional diet and exercise program. In going this route, after
the extreme weight loss, some patients may require that flaps of skin be removed which chronic
obesity has caused to loose elasticity.
Reconstructive procedures are not a substitute for a healthy diet or exercise plan and should
not be treated as a "quick fix". The American Society for Aethetic Plastic Surgery has said
that people are not just looking for a simple procedure these days, they are looking tucks,
and elimination of skin flaps. Ironically, these are things that can be accomplished by a
simple exercise regimen. The effects of diet and exercise can take years off your face and
body, not to mention, keeping you in great physical shape, so that once a cosmetic surgery
procedure is completed, your healing process is accelerated. There is no substitute for an
excellent diet and exercise regimen, and it is a great bonus for those who still undergo
plastic surgery, because the effects of your surgery will be longer lasting, and help you
achieve the effects you are seeking.
Working with diets are not just for those seeking to loose weight. That means to gain the
strength and nutritional value needed, one may try avoiding processed foods and eat natural;
whole foods like fruits, vegetables, organic meats and whole grains are a great start. It
also means giving yourself the nutritional supplements needed to provide your body with the
vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids necessary to keep you healthy and
functioning on a higher level.
What many forget is that cosmetic surgery operations can carry as many risks to health as
more medically based procedures, and potential patients should make sure they understand
the many risks involved. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, make sure your consult
your doctor. Your doctor will be able to help you figure out whether you could really benefit
from a cosmetic operation, and, if so, recommend the correct course of action.
