Fluid is lost along with the fat, and it's crucial that this fluid be replaced during the procedure to prevent shock. For this reason, you will need to be carefully monitored and have intravenous fluids during and immediately after surgery.

After a few days any gauze dressings can be removed and you may need to wear a surgical bra. You should wear it as directed by your surgeon. The swelling in your breasts will take a couple of months to completely go away.

You should be able to return to work within a few days. You should follow your surgeon's advice on when you can start exercising and returning to your normal activities. Your breasts will probably be sensitive for two or three weeks, so you should avoid physical contact. The scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks.

Your ability to walk and participate in other activities is likely to improve after surgery. Your big toe joint should be less painful and move better. Your toe might look more normal than before after the incision has healed and the swelling has passed.

Everyday your face makes thousands of different expressions, each one adding a little bit of damage to your skin in the form of lines and wrinkles. Some lines, such as those between your brows, can become quite dramatic. One way to lessen these lines and wrinkles is to lessen the movements of certain muscles and reduce the strain on your face.

Botulinum toxin is derived from a bacteria, purified and used in a very small quantity - it is not the "live" form of the bacteria. It blocks nerve signals to the muscle, which weakens the muscle and lessens the lines in the skin over that muscle - lines gradually smooth out from disuse and new wrinkles cannot form in the treated area. This effect eventually wears off and the muscle returns to normal, necessitating another injection of botulinum toxin to continue the improvement. With time the muscle might "learn" not to contract, or might be weakened from lack of use and the treatments can be stopped or the time between each treatment can be lengthened. After the injections are performed it takes a few days for the muscle to become paralyzed and the results last for four to six months afterwards.

Appendectomy Surgery
Appendicitis is a fairly common ailment, we all know someone who has had appendectomy surgery. The appendix is a tube like structure that measures between 3 to 6 inches in length, and it is located at fork in the road where the small and large intestines meet. If your appendix does become infected or inflamed, it has to be removed, that is the only option.

If you are afflicted with appendicitis it will hit you very quickly, it is a rapid illness, and is caused by an obstruction and the usual object that blocks the appendix is fecal (stool), that cause the appendix to become inflamed. The first sign of appendicitis is abdominal pain, which starts out as a stomach ache, but as it progresses, the pain becomes severe and moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. Your right side will be very sensitive to touch. The pain brings along a few of his friends, nausea, vomiting and a fever.

Appendectomy surgery more often than not is an emergency surgery. Because of that reason, diagnosis will be made quickly based on your symptoms and a physical examination. If those results are inconclusive, blood test and abdominal X-ray will be done. Once appendicitis is confirmed, you will be prepared for surgery.

The first question that your surgeon will ask is when the last time that you ate was; because you will need to have general anesthesia and it can only be given on any empty stomach. Your nurse will start an IV and give you a sedative to make you sleepy. The entire procedure usually takes about an hour. There are two options for an appendectomy, an open operation or laparoscopically.

If you have the open technique, your surgeon will make a short incision through the skin and underlying fat, separating the wall of the muscles. Your surgeon will then be able to see the peritoneum which is the lining of the abdominal cavity. The peritoneum will be cut to reveal the cecum which is the section of the large intestine that the appendix is attached. Your small intestine will be moved aside, the blood vessels that surround your appendix will be tied, and then your appendix will be freed from any surrounding structures.

Next, the appendix will be tied off and severed. The stump of the appendix will be carefully placed in the cecum. Finally, the peritoneum, the muscle wall, and the skin incision are closed with either sutures or tiny staples.

Your surgeon may choose to use a laparoscope to view the inside of the abdominal cavity while removing your appendix. A laparoscope is a long metal tube with a lens that has a TV camera attached to it. Your surgeon will be able to see everything on a TV monitor while he is removing the appendix with surgical instruments called cannulas that have been inserted into a small opening.

Regardless of the type of procedure you undergo for your appendectomy surgery, you will experience minimal postoperative discomfort. But if you do have any pain or discomfort you will be given oral medication to relieve the symptoms.

You'll remain in the recovery room until you have completely awaken, then you will be moved to your hospital room. You should be released the day after your surgery and you can begin normal activity that day, however, you won't be able to participate in any strenuous activities like swimming or working out at the gym, you will need to wait for at least 10 days after your surgery.

You will be able to do everything that you did before your surgery once you've completely healed. You need to be sure to keep all of your follow-up appointments with your doctor, because some people become hypothyroid after thyroid surgery. If this happens, you will need to start taking thyroid hormone. This occurs even more frequently when you've had thyroid cancer. If you've had thyroid cancer and that was the reason for your surgery, your doctor will have you start a radioactive therapy regime before he/she has you start thyroid hormone therapy.

There are a few risks involved when having thyroid surgery and they include bleeding that may cause acute respiratory distress, permanent hoarseness caused by injury to the recurrent laryngeal, and damage to the parathyroid glands that control calcium levels in your body.

If you're premenopausal, having your ovaries removed will initiate menopause. You cannot resume sexual activity until six weeks after your surgery.

As women we sometimes associate our uterus with our femininity and can feel a sense a loss. However, some women are so glad to be rid of their symptoms that they are excited and look forward to getting on with their lives. Cesarean Birth
If you are unable to give birth naturally you deliver you baby by cesarean or what we all know as a c-section.

Some reasons why you might have a c-section

• Multiple births

• Contractions don't open your cervix

• Umbilical cord is pinched or compressed

• Previous cesarean birth

If you are awake during your c-section, your spouse or designated partner will be allowed in the operating room with you, to hold your hand, remind you to breathe, and just be there with you. A nurse will prepare you for the surgery, scrubbing your stomach and sterilizing it.

You will be given an epidural or general anesthesia so that you won't feel any pain during surgery. It should be noted that if you are given general anesthesia you will be not be awake during the procedure. Your obstetrician will make an incision that extends through your skin and the wall of the abdomen. The incision is made right above the pubic hairline and can run horizontal or vertically. The muscles in your abdomen are moved aside rather than cut. A second incision is made in the wall of the uterus.

Your baby will be delivered through the incisions; the umbilical cord will be cut, followed by the removal of the placenta. Your uterus is closed using dissolvable stitches and either stitches or staples will be used to close the incision on your skin.

If you have an epidural, are awake, you will be allowed to hold your baby immediately follow birth. Depending on the hospital that you deliver in, you will be taken back to your room or a recovery room where your vital signs and abdomen will be checked regularly.

Some women think that you can't breast feed your baby if you have a c-section, but this is not true. Just let your obstetrician know that you want to breastfeed your baby. More than likely you will remain in the hospital for 2 to 4 days after your c-section. The amount of time that you remain in the hospital depends on the reason you had to have the cesarean birth and how long it will take your body to recover from the procedure. It will take a couple of weeks for you abdomen to heal; you may experience some mild cramping, bleeding or discharge, bleeding with clots and some pain at the incision site. For a couple of weeks after your cesarean birth you should place anything in your vagina or have sex because of the risk of infection. Be sure to ask your doctor if you have any questions and also let him/her know if you are having any problems.

Hemorrhoid Surgery
I know that you are embarrassed to talk about your hemorrhoids, you are not alone, most people who have them are, but you can have hemorrhoid surgery to remove them. This little annoying and painful creatures are actually swollen and inflamed veins in your anus and rectum.

You can't see or feel internal hemorrhoids, but you sure feel them if you strain too much when passing stool, this can injure the hemorrhoid surface causing it to bleed. If you have this type of hemorrhoid you will be see small amounts of blood on your toilet paper, maybe even a few drops in the toilet itself, otherwise you don't even know that they are there, they are painless. If you strain too much though you can push the little critter through the anal opening and this can cause pain and irritation.

If one of these critter does pop out you will then have what is called an external hemorrhoid. These are painful. Blood tends to pool in these, forming a clot, causing severe pain, swelling and inflammation. This form of hemorrhoid can itch or bleed.

In the event that a blood clot has formed, your doctor will need to remove the clot with a small incision, which will give you instant relief. But for more persistent bleeding or painful hemorrhoids you will indeed need surgery.

A few procedures that may be tried before surgery are rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, infrared light or stapling. For the rubber band procedure, your doctor will place a rubber band around the base of your hemorrhoid to cut off the circulation, it will then fall off. For sclerotherapy your doctor will inject a chemical solution around the blood vessel to shrink the hemorrhoid. Stapling, this procedure blocks blood flow to hemorrhoidal tissue, and is less painful than surgery.

Brow Lift Surgery
I don't know of any woman who is happy with her forehead after 40. A forehead lift or brow lift surgery can erase the wrinkles giving you a younger more relaxed forehead. Instead of looking sad or tired you will look more refreshed.

During brow lift surgery the muscles and tissue in your forehead are removed, altered, or smoothed to raise the eyebrows and minimize frown lines. If you stand in front of your mirror, and pull back the skin around the outer edges of your eyes, just above your eyebrows, it will raise your brow and forehead area so that you can visualize what your forehead will look like after surgery.

A brow lift will more than likely be done in your surgeon's office, but on rare occasions it is performed at a hospital. This procedure requires a local anesthetic that is combined with a sedative to make your drowsy. You are awake during the surgery, but relaxed, and no worries, you won't feel any pain, just some minor tugging and maybe a little discomfort.

There are a couple different approaches to your brow lift surgery that your surgeon will consider, the classic method or the endoscopic forehead lift. For the classic forehead lift your hair will be tied back with rubber bands on each side of the incision line. Don't worry, your head does not have to be shaved, but if your hair is long or excessive, appearing in front of the incision line it will need to be trimmed.

Once that is done, a coronal incision will be made. It will start at ear level and travel across the top of your forehead and down the opposite side of your head. The incision is not visible because it is made far enough behind the hairline and even the scar that will remain behind won't be seen.

Next, the skin on your forehead will be gently lifted so that the underlying tissue can be removed as well as altering or releasing the muscles of the forehead if necessary. Any excess skin at the incision site will be trimmed away and your eyebrows may be raised to help create that smoother, youthful appearance that you are seeking.

The incision will then be sealed with stitches or clips. To prevent irritation your face and hair will be washed and the rubber bands will be removed from your hair as well. Gauze will be placed over the incision and your head will be wrapped in an elastic bandage.

The endoscopic forehead lift differs in that your surgeon will make only three, four or five small incisions in your scalp. A pencil-like camera called an endoscope is connected to a television monitor; it is inserted through one of the incisions so that your surgeon will have a clear view of the muscles and tissues that are just beneath the skin. Using another instrument that is inserted in one of the other incisions, the skin on your forehead is lifted so that the muscles and tissues can be removed or altered to give you a smoother appearance. Your eyebrows might be lifted as well and secure into a higher position by stitches beneath the surface of the skin or by temporary fixation screws placed behind the hairline.

When your brow lift surgery is completed the incisions are closed with stitches or clips and the area is washed. And again, gauze with an elastic bandage will be wrapped around your head.

However if you are having any other kind of facial cosmetic surgery such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, you won't need to have a new incision made, the implants can be inserted through the same incisions that are requires for the other surgeries.

After your surgery you will be sent home with instructions on what you can and can't eat and your activity restraints. The ability to move your mouth and lips will be temporarily impaired. Dissolvable stitches will be used to close the incisions in your mouth and should dissolve within about 10 days.

For lower jaw surgery, internal incisions are made on each side of the lower lip creating a pocket that the lower-jaw implant can be inserted. Dissolving stitches are used to close the incisions.

While you are healing your activities and diet will be restricted. You will have a limited ability to smile, talk or move your mouth for several days to weeks after your surgery. Your will also be given instructions about dental and oral hygiene during your recovery period.

After any facial surgery it may take a few weeks or even a few months for you to be able to really evaluate your new look. So give yourself time to adjust to the new you.

No matter which surgery you have your incision site will be stitched and bandaged. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to care for the bandage after your surgery. Your surgeon will also instruct you on how to the most comfortable and pain free ways to sit and lay down.

If you are an exceptionally physically active person, beware: You will have to severely limit strenuous exercise for at least six weeks. Your doctor will advise you on this as you go through the healing process. You may need to take up to one month off work after the surgery to ensure proper recovery. Again, your doctor will help you determine this based on your personal situation.

Endodontic Microsurgery
Have you experienced a root canal? Just hearing the name alone is enough to send you running from the dentist chair, but almost everyone has to have one sooner or later. If you've had a root canal and develop an infection afterwards you will require what is called endodontic microsurgery.

When you undergo a root canal, inflamed, infected tissue is removed and the canals are cleaned. But sometimes, not always, after you've had a root canal infected debris hides out in the small branches off the main canal preventing the healing process by causing an infection. For endodontic microsurgery, the root tip is removed as well as the infected tissue. This procedure is done under an operating microscope.

If this procedure is require talk to your dentist about referring you to an endodontist. Your endodontist will take X-rays; give you an antimicrobial mouth rinse, anti-inflammatory medication and/or antibiotics before your surgery.

You will be given a local anesthetic called epinephrine the dosage is twice as much as the anesthetics used when you get a filling. The reason for the extra epinephrine is to reduce bleeding near the surgical site by constricting your blood vessels that your surgeon can see the root.

Your surgeon will then cut and lift the gum away from the tooth for easy access to the root. The infected tissue will then be removed along with the remaining root tip. A dye will be used that highlights cracks and fractures in the tooth. The procedure will be stopped if it is discovered that the tooth is cracked or fractured, it will need to be extracted.

To complete the endodontic microsurgery the tooth canal is cleaned and sealed. The cleaning takes place under a microscope using ultrasonic instruments. Because the light and magnification help your surgeon to see the tooth canal better this increases the chance of success. Before suturing the tissue back in place, your endodontist will need to take an X-ray of the area.

Depending on the location of the tooth, the complexity of the root structure, the endodontic microsurgeries usually take between 30 to 90 minutes. If it's one of your front teeth that requires surgery it will almost always take less time with the lower molars taking the longest.

Before leaving your endodontist's office you will be instructed on what you can eat and drink and any medications that you need to take. You will be required to rest for the first 10 to 12 hours and to ice the area where the procedure was done. You may experience some bruising and swelling, with the swelling increasing the second day after your surgery. If you are experiencing pain it can be controlled with an ibuprofen or prescription medication.

You shouldn't smoke or eat hard crunchy food, brush the area that you had the surgery on or rinse vigorously so that you are able to heal. And though it is going to be tempting, don't lift your lip to examine the area, because this can disrupt blood-clot formation and loosen the sutures.

Because of the trauma of the surgery you may experience some numbness for days or even weeks. This is not indicative of nerve damage, but be sure to tell your dentist about any numbness you experience.

Prostrate Surgery
If your doctor has told you that you have prostate cancer, chances are that you will require prostrate surgery. The surgery itself requires 5 miniscule incisions. One will be made right below your belly button, and two more on each side of your lower abdomen. Before your surgery you will need to meet with your surgeon so that he can answer any questions that may have. After surgery you will need to be on a liquid diet gradually returning to solid foods. Wrist Surgery
If you have a wrist fracture of a ganglion cyst or a torn ligament in your wrist or even wrist pain that you've had for months that just won't go away, then arthroscopic wrist surgery is for you. Wrist arthroscopy is used to smooth the bone surfaces and to remove all of the inflamed tissue.

When the results of other testing techniques do not provide your surgeon with a clear diagnosis, arthroscopic exploratory surgery will be used to diagnose the cause of your long term wrist pain. Your surgeon will find all the places that are inflamed or have cartilage damage or any other problems that may occur after a wrist injury. In most cases, after the diagnosis is made, the problem will be fixed right there arthroscopically as well.

If you've broken your wrist, small fragments of your bone may have stayed within the joint. In order to set the pieces of bone, remove the fragments your surgeon will use arthroscopic surgery as well, stabilizing the bones with pins, wires or screws.

If you have a ganglion cyst that has grown from a stalk between two of the wrist bones you will need to have it removed. The surgeon will remove the stock during an arthroscopic procedure minimizing the chances of the cyst recurring.

If you fall and tear the ligaments in your hand, the fibrous bands of connective tissue that link or hinge bones, your surgeon can repair the tears with arthroscopic surgery.

Your wrist should be elevated for about two or three days after your surgery. You will need to keep your bandages dry and clean. You can ice to help with the swelling. And your surgeon or a physical therapist will provide you with a list of exercises that you should use to regain motion and rebuild your strength. Often pain is relatively mild after surgery, but you can use an analgesic medication to relieve any discomfort that you may be experiencing.

It is unusual to experience complications during or after arthroscopic wrist surgery, but if you do they include infection, nerve injuries, excessive swelling, bleeding, scarring, or tendon tearing. If you can find a surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the hand, the possibility of complications will be greatly reduced.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery
Are your wrists killing you after a long day at the computer? Do you have a constant tingling in your hands and do they fall asleep on you periodically throughout the day? If so then chances are you need carpal tunnel surgery. Because the wrist is a complex joint containing eight small bones and lots of connecting ligaments, arthroscopy is used for this surgery. This allows the surgeon to make small incisions into the muscle and tissue to view the anatomic parts and their movements.

The benefits of using an arthroscope are for a more accurate diagnosis and to correct the problems in the joint at the same time. You will have fewer problems and will recover much quicker than with regular surgery. It is also an outpatient procedure; you should be home in your own bed within a couple of hours.

The Surgery

When the surgeon begins, he will make small incisions through your skin, in specific locations around the joint. The incision measure less than a half inch long, the arthroscope is the size of a pencil and is inserted into the incision. The arthroscope has a small lens, a miniature camera, and a lighting system.

Your joint will be projected from the camera onto a television screen in a three-dimensional image. Your surgeon will watch the monitor as he moves the instrument around the joint. If your surgeon finds problems, there are probes, forceps, knives, and shavers at the ends of the arthroscope to correct the problem.

If your surgeon is unsure of what is causing your wrist pain, he may use diagnostic arthroscopy to find out what is causing wrist pain. It can also be used if your wrist pain continues for any length of time despite nonsurgical treatment.

What happens before arthroscopic surgery?

• You will need a physical exam of the hand and wrist

• Provide a medical history

• Your surgeon will need to do tests that will replicate the pain and discomfort that you are feeling so he has a better understanding of where the pain is generating from.

• You will need X-rays or arthorgram of your wrist

For your surgery a regional anesthesia will be used numbing only the hand and arm. You can have a sedative for relaxation if need be. After surgery, your incision will be closed with a small stitch and a dressing will be applied. Rarely, but sometimes a splint is used.

Nose Surgery
If you don't like the shape of your nose or are having breathing problems, nose surgery can improve the form and function of your nose. If you have a genetic deformity or you've noticed that as you are getting older your nose has started to droop, then you may want to consider nose surgery as well.

If you do decide that nose surgery is for you then you should not only talk to your doctor, but to a physician who specializes in nasal airway function along with plastic surgery as well. The reason for that is so that not only will appearance be considered but your breathing will too.

The nasal surgery that you are seeking is called Rhinoplasty; this procedure will reshape your nose so that it is in balance with the rest of your faces. Because your nose is in the center of your face, even the smallest modification can drastically improve your appearance. You will need to glean a clear understanding of the changes that will occur, the limitations and the risks before you have this surgery.

If you are having your nose reshaped, the surgeon will begin by lifting the skin so that he is able remove or rearrange the bone and cartilage. Once the new frame is complete the skin is redraped and sutured. To help retain the new shape of your nose while it heals, a nasal splint will be placed on the outside of the nose. Sometimes in order to stabilize the septum, a soft, absorbent material is placed inside the nose; this will be removed the morning after surgery. All of your other dressings and splints will be removed a week after surgery.

If you are having surgery to correct a chronically stuffy nose or for a nasal obstruction you will need what is called a septorhinoplasty. Your symptoms may be caused because the partition between your nostrils is crooked or bent from abnormal growth or injury; this is called a deviated septum.

Septoplasty trims, reshapes and repositions parts of the septal cartilage and bone. If you need this surgery and have wanted plastic surgery as well, you could combine both surgeries. Internal splints as well as some soft packing will be placed in the nostrils in order to hold the septum in its new position. You will probably have some swelling for a week or two, but after the packing is removed, you will notice a dramatic improvement in breathing.

If you break your nose, you should see a doctor to find out if the bones have been pushed over or out to one side, you will need an X-ray to determine if the nasal bones have been fractured, broken or displaced. You may need nose surgery to replace the nasal bones to a straighter position which will require a local or general anesthesia. This procedure will normally be done about a week after your injury so that bones don't heal in a displaced position.

Nose surgery for breaks only have a 50% success rate because many fractures are irregular and won't pop back into place. Corrective nasal surgery can help restore breathing. This procedure is normally done as an outpatient; you will have massive swelling and bruising and probably won't want to be seen in public for about a week.

If left untreated arthritis in your shoulder can cause tears in rotator cuff. And if you don't have arthritis and tear your rotator cuff without having it fixed it can lead to arthritis in the shoulder. If you are experiencing arthritis in your shoulder from post-traumatic arthritis and avascular necrosis, then, surgery can help to alleviate your symptoms. Eyelid Surgery

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing sends out minute pulses of high-energy light which is absorbed by water in the skin called chromophores. As the light from the laser transforms to heat energy, the heat vaporizes thin sections of skin, layer by layer. As the lasered area heals, new skin grows to replace the damaged skin that was removed during treatment.

This treatment is precise, causing minimal damage to the surrounding skin and tissue. The face is the most common area to have lasered, but it can be done on skin in other areas of the body.

How it's done

The areas that you want treated are cleaned and marked with a pen. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area before treatment. If you are anxious a sedative may be administered so that you can relax. If you plan on having your entire face treated, you may need general anesthesia, pain relievers and/or sedation. Goggles should be worn to prevent eye damage by the laser and wet towels should be placed around the work area to absorb excess laser pulses.

Pulses are sent out by placing lasers over the skin. Each pulse lasts less than a millisecond. The skin will be wiped with water or a saline solution between passes with the laser to cool the skin and remove tissue that the laser has destroyed.

You may feel a stinging or slight burning sensation from the laser pulses, or you may feel a snapping sensation like a rubber band against your skin. In most cases there will be no bleeding; however, severely damaged skin may bleed. When you are all done, a clean dressing or ointment will be placed over the area. Laser resurfacing is usually done in the doctor's office as an outpatient.

After you've had laser resurfacing surgery the healing time and recovery will depend on the size and depth of the treated area. While your skin is healing you will need to rinse your skin several times a day with cool tap water to prevent infection and to get rid of the crusting that sometimes develops. Avoid sun exposure and after peeling has stopped, be sure to use sunscreen every day. New skin is more susceptible to sun damage. You may be given an antiviral drug call acyclovir to prevent infection if you had a large area of skin that was treated. Several follow-up visits to your doctor may be needed to monitor your skin's healing and regrowth process as well as identifying and treating any infections or other complications.

Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is the only way to fix a cataract. A cataract is like having a fog covering the lens of your eye blocking the passage of light to the retina, it is virtually painless. How are they treated?

The only way to correct vision loss caused by a cataract is by surgery. If an older adult has a cataract it doesn't necessarily need to be removed. Vision loss from a cataract is a slow process and sometimes never becomes severe.

If you are having vision problems there are numerous things that you can do like get eyeglasses, contacts, or other vision aids. Keep your vision prescription up to date. Your activity will be restricted for about 6 weeks after surgery or until you've successfully completed your rehab program.

Surgery
People have surgery for a multitude of reasons. But the most common reason is to repair an injury, for example if you've broken a bone, or you may want to have surgery to relieve numbness caused by a herniated disc. You may require an appendectomy or need a biopsy.

Whatever your need, most minor surgeries can be done the same day, even in your doctor's office. Preparing for minor surgery takes only a few hours. Major surgery is still done in a hospital operating room. Unless your need is emergent your surgery could take days or even weeks to prepare for.

Before your surgery, you will undergo a preoperative exam that will include blood work, an EKG (electro cardio gram) and x-rays. These are all preventative measures to make sure that you don't have any underlying health issues and to prevent problems during the surgery itself.

Before your surgery you will visit with your surgeon in his office. You make a list of all the questions that you have concerning your surgery so that you can ask them. Your surgeon will explain why you need the surgery, what it will entail, the risks and the outcome, and how long your recovery period will be. Don't be afraid to talk to the surgeon about your fears and worries that pertain to the surgery. You can also ask if there are any other options for your problem besides surgery.

A preadmission testing nurse will provide you with a list of instructions that will help you prepare for the day of your surgery. When you arrive at the hospital for your surgery you will be asked to sign a surgery consent form as well as a form that identifies the correct body part for surgery. This information will help to assist the surgery team as they prepare you for surgery.

A few things you can expect from your nurse before your surgery

Back Surgery

Lasik Surgery
Of all of the refractive surgery procedures available, Lasik surgery is the preferred surgery and used the most by physicians. Lasik is so popular because it is relatively pain free afterwards and you can notice better vision as soon as the next day.

The Lasik eye surgery uses an instrument called a microkeratome that makes a thin, circular flap in the cornea. The flap is folded back by the surgeon who then removes some of your corneal tissue with an excimer laser. This cool ultraviolet beam from this laser removes very minute fragments of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. An added bonus of having your cornea reshaped correctly is that your cornea will be able to focus light into your eye and onto the retina giving you better vision than you had before surgery. Then the flap is replaced back over the corneal tissue.

You can benefit from the Lasik procedure if you are nearsighted or farsighted. The lasers can also correct astigmatism, but few people know about this benefit. You will need to have an eye exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for this type of vision correction and just how much laser ablation you will need.

If you experience dry eye you need to inform your surgeon that you can be treated before your Lasik eye surgery. You should also tell your doctor if you are experiencing any health problem and all medications that you are taking. Next, a map of your cornea will also be created before your surgery with a corneal topographer which will give your surgeon a detailed map of aberrations impairing your vision.

The day of your surgery you will walk in have the surgery and walk out. Don't worry about pain, because the majority of people who have had Lasik surgery state that they don't feel any pain. Your eyes are anesthetized with drops before the procedure. The surgery takes less than five minutes, you're awake during the procedure, and the doctor will give you a mild sedative right before. You will need to have someone go with you who can drive you home when it's all done.

When the procedure is done, you will stay for a short period, and then you will be allowed to leave. It's important to follow the recommendations that your doctor gives you, get adequate rest, fill and use the prescriptions if he gives you any and phone your physician immediately if you experience any problems. What happens after surgery can impact your vision just as much as the surgery itself.

You will probably be okay to return to work the following day, but most doctors recommend that you take a few days off and rest.
