Body-Contouring Surgery

If you have lost over a 100 pounds because of weight loss surgery or through diet and exercise and find that are left with large amounts of heavy, loose folds of skin around the abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts, buttocks and face, body-contouring surgery is what you will need. Because your skin sags and loses its elasticity from being stretched for a long period of time, it may fail to shrink back to its former size and shape.

This excess skin will more than likely limit your mobility as well as causing hygiene and medical problems. You may have rashes and sores that have developed from chronic skin-on-skin contact that may lead to infection. Not to mention the fact that you have lost a large amount of weight, you want to show off your new body, you want your body to reflect the new you! Most often though the only way to remove excess skin is through body-contouring plastic surgery.

For the majority of body-contouring procedures an incision will be made in the least obvious part of the area to be trimmed, excess skin will be removed, and tiny stitches will be used to minimize scarring. The risks for you are greater with this type of surgery vs. standard cosmetic surgery because of the amount of skin that is being removed.

Some possible risks:

• Bleeding

• Infection

• The incision site may separate

• Abnormal scar formation

• A mass or lump caused by fluid buildup may appear

• You may not be happy with your results

• Deep vein thrombosis

• A pulmonary embolism

Multiple surgeries may be required to minimize complications like infection and blood loss, they will more than likely be done over a period of years as one or two areas of the body are addressed at a time.

Body areas most often treated

• Abdomen

• Buttocks

• Thighs

• Breasts

• Arms

• Face and neck

Your body-contouring surgery will take place in a hospital and your will need general anesthesia. Tubes will be placed in the wound to drain excess fluid. You will be given medications for pain and discomfort. You will experience soreness, swelling and bruising for two to three weeks after your surgery.
