Even though your brain controls and coordinates all of your body functions, memory, learn and thinking as well, it can suffer from bleeding or infection or any other kind of trauma and as a result, may require brain surgery.
Causes for Brain Surgery
• Brain cancer
• Subdural Hematomas
• Subarachnoid hemorrhage
• Intraventricular bleed
• Hydrocephalus
If you require brain surgery, and ignore the signs and treatments, further damage can be inflicted on your brain. Damage to the brain can impair the brain's ability to function properly by causing pressure to build. This pressure and loss of function can lead to long term brain damage and death if it's not treated.
To treat this pressure you will need what is called a craniotomy. This is an operation that opens the skull to allow access to the brain for surgical repair. You will be placed under general anesthesia. Your head will be shaved. Your surgeon will cut through the scalp over the area where the brain injury is located. A hole will be cut into the skull to access the brain. This is enables your surgeon to repair any ruptured blood vessels and to remove the blood clot or growth.
Once the operation is completed, the piece of bone that was removed is replaced, the muscle and skin are stitched up and a drain is placed inside the brain to remove any excess blood left from the surgery.
Possible Complications
• allergic reaction to the anesthetic
• bleeding
• infection
• brain damage
• brain swelling
• stroke
• seizures
The amount of time that it takes you to recover depends on the condition and whether or not there were any complications. Usually recovery is about six to twelve weeks. If there are complications, you may need a longer hospital stay and additional care in a rehab unit.
