Do you have too much skin on your eyelids, to the turn inward or outward? If so, eyelid surgery can fix your problem easing any eye discomfort that you may be experiencing and it will make you look better too! There is a name for what you have its called Ptosis which simply means that the upper eyelid droops. Some people are born with this condition.
If your child has congenital ptosis you may notice that he/she tilts their head backwards a lot, they do that in order to see. It is recommended that corrective surgery for children be done between 2-4years of age, definitely it should be done before they start school, kids can be cruel, and you don't want your child teased because of his/her looks. The type of surgery varies, depending upon how much the eyelids droop.
As you age you may notice the skin on your eyelid drooping, this is called involutional ptosis. If you look in the mirror and notice an uneven appearance, you could have ptosis in just one eye. You can have surgery to shorten the muscle that opens the eyelid and this will make you look better, if you are experiencing vision problems surgery may correct that as well.
Excess Eyelid Skin
As you age you may collect an excess of skin around the eyelid. Because the skin around the eyelid is the thinnest skin of the body, it tends to stretch. If the excess is in your upper eyelid it may limit your vision from the side view. This exact same problem causes bags to form in the lower eyelids.
Removal of this excess skin can be done by a surgical procedure called a blepharoplasty improving side vision and other symptoms. If you have excess fatty tissue it can be removed at the same time.
Ectropion
Because the skin of the eyelid is so pliable, as you age the lower eyelid may droop downward and turn outward, this is called ectropion. If you burn your eyelids or have a skin disease these will contribute to the problem as well. This eyelid disorder causes dryness of the eyes, excessive tearing, redness and sensitivity to light and wind. Surgery can improve your symptoms while restoring the eyelid to its normal position.
Entropion
If age has not treated you kindly and your lower eyelid turns inward, this is called entropion. But age isn't the only factor that causes this disease, if you've had an infection or have experienced scarring inside your lid this will entropion as well. One of the biggest complaints of this disorder is that the eyelashes and skin rub against the eye, making it red, irritated, watery, as well as being sensitive to light and wind. If entropion goes untreated an infection can occur on the clear surface of the eye. To relieve your symptoms you will need eyelid surgery so that the eyelid can be turned outward to its normal position.
