If you have been debating about whether or not you should have facial surgery, you should know that plastic surgeons can use implants to improve and enhance your facial contours. Do you want to strengthen your jaw line, align your chin or bring your cheekbones into balance with the rest of your face? If you are looking for an improvement and not perfection in the way that you look and have realistic expectations, then a facial implant will work for you.
Be very concise about your expectations when you discuss your surgery with your plastic surgeon. Your plastic surgeon can give you a realistic view of what an implant can do for you. If you have pictures of people who have the facial features that you'd like, be sure to bring them to your plastic surgeon before your surgery.
Your plastic surgery may be done on an outpatient basis, but some implants require that you stay overnight. You may only need a local anesthetic combined with a sedative depending on the type of facial implant that you are having done. But for the most part a general anesthesia is performed.
Types of implants
• Chin
• Cheek
• Lower jaw
For a chin implant your surgeon will make a small incision on the front of your jawbone to create a pocket and insert the implant. This procedure takes about 20 minutes. After your surgery you will have some swelling and some discomfort that may last for several days. You may have a hard time smiling and talking. After your surgery you will receive special instructions on dental hygiene, eating and activity restrictions.
For cheek implant surgery, an incision is made either inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid, a pocket is formed and the implant is inserted. However if you are having any other kind of facial cosmetic surgery such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, you won't need to have a new incision made, the implants can be inserted through the same incisions that are requires for the other surgeries.
After your surgery you will be sent home with instructions on what you can and can't eat and your activity restraints. The ability to move your mouth and lips will be temporarily impaired. Dissolvable stitches will be used to close the incisions in your mouth and should dissolve within about 10 days.
For lower jaw surgery, internal incisions are made on each side of the lower lip creating a pocket that the lower-jaw implant can be inserted. Dissolving stitches are used to close the incisions.
While you are healing your activities and diet will be restricted. You will have a limited ability to smile, talk or move your mouth for several days to weeks after your surgery. Your will also be given instructions about dental and oral hygiene during your recovery period.
After any facial surgery it may take a few weeks or even a few months for you to be able to really evaluate your new look. So give yourself time to adjust to the new you.
