Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy surgery uses a lighted viewing instrument called a laparoscope that is inserted into the lower abdomen through a small incision that is made just below the navel. A needle is then placed in the abdomen to inflate it with gas. The gas pushes the wall of the abdomen away from the organs so that the physician can see them more clearly.

The laparoscopy technique is often used to both diagnose and treat the problem. Incisions may be made so that other instruments like lasers or cutting devices can be easily inserted allowing for the treatment of certain problems. The laparoscopy gives allows the doctor to identify diseased organs, take tissue samples for biopsies, and remove any abnormal growths. This procedure can help you to avoid a more invasive surgery. It leaves smaller scars, is less risky, and recovery time is shortened.

Some health problems that a laparoscopy can diagnose and treat

• Problems in the female reproductive organs

• Endometriosis

• Infertility

• Tubal pregnancy

• Tubal ligation

• Gallbladder removal

More advanced laparoscopic surgeries

New laparoscopic instruments now comes with hand-access devices allowing the surgeon to place a hand in the abdomen during surgery to do procedures that normally would have required open surgery. So now you can have laparoscopic pancreatic, liver and biliary surgeries done allowing for shorter hospital stays, less pain, rapid recovery and the ability to return to work much sooner compared to patients with open surgical wounds.

Some Laparoscopic surgery procedures

• A laparoscopic splenectomy is where the spleen is removed. This procedure can be done with small and large spleens.

• Removal of retroperitoneal tumors that grow deep within the abdomen. Using the laparoscopic instrument that with the hand-access device, the tumors can be removed completely without fear of fracturing them.

• Stomach leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma are tumors outside the stomach that are easily removed with laparoscopic techniques and laparoscopic suturing is used to repair the stomach wall.

In the near future you will see more and more procedures being performed by laparoscopy surgery as people realize the advantages of these minimally invasive applications, and as more surgeons become trained to perform the advanced procedures.
