Did you know that your vagina is strengthened throughout its length by a layer of smooth muscle? That's right! And you also have what is called a pelvic floor. Yes, that is correct, you have a pelvic floor, which is a combination of voluntary and involuntary muscles called the 'levator ani' and strong connective tissue layers. When your pelvic floor is damaged during childbirth or age abuses it or just plain old gravity takes its toll on these organs, stretching them and tearing them, it can leave a gaping in the lower vagina.

Have you ever been to a taffy pull? Three or four people take a sheet of taffy and pull it and stretch it until it tears, well that is exactly what happens in the vagina. This can cause physical discomfort, drying and pressure. Vaginal plastic surgery restores the lower vaginal musculature by tightening the vaginal diameter and trimming away any excess skin. What can happen after you give birth or have an episiotomy is that the inner skin can protrude through the vaginal opening. Surgery can replace the skin or simply remove it altogether which results in a clean, symmetrical appearance with an improvement in function as well.

Tips for Recovery

• These procedures are done as outpatient surgery, so you'll go home right after surgery.

• You can resume normal everyday light activities the same day or the next day.

• Don't shower until the day after shower

• You will experience minimal pain that usually doesn't require any medication

• Swelling is mild to moderate and peaks two or three days following surgery, disappearing rapidly between the 2 to 3 week mark.

• Minimal or no bruising

• Stitches are absorbable - they don't need to be removed

• Most people don't need to take time off work, but it usually recommended that you take a week off to rest.
