Labia Reduction Surgery

If you have an enlarged labia minora it can be embarrassing, painful and cause problems sexually. Are you ashamed to get undressed in a locker room or even in the privacy of your own bedroom in front of your mate because of your protruding vaginal lips? Then labia reduction surgery is a viable option for you.

Enlargement of the labia minora can be genetic or caused by pregnancy, childbirth and other hormonal causes. Local irritation, problems with personal hygiene, complications with sexual intercourse and discomfort during certain athletic activities or simply walking are all indicative for surgical reduction procedures.

Labiaplasty or labial reduction involves a technique that reduces the large or uneven labia minora to a thinner, more comfortable, and more appealing size and shape. The aim of labial reduction surgery is to preserve most of the natural contour, pigmentation, and sensitivity of the labia minora with minimal scarring. Your individual needs and expectations should be discussed during your initial consultation with your cosmetic surgeon.

The Procedure

Reduction of the labia minora (Labiaplasty or Labial Reduction) is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient. Care is taken to avoid over-resection of the labia and to avoid interference with the clitoris or urethral opening. This careful reduction of the labia minora may serve to improve your physical comfort and sexuality. It won't be long until you are singing, "Oh-oh-O, I feel like a woman!"

After Surgery

After surgery, you may need to wear a dressing that will be similar to a pad worn during menstruation. There might be some swelling and fluid in the labia so bed rest is beneficial for the first day. You will need to wear a small sanitary napkin until the ooze stops, usually after 1-2 weeks after labial reduction. You should avoid using tampons. Care for labial reduction surgical site during the first days is important; take a shower once or twice a day and then dry the area. Avoid strenuous activity as well as sexual intercourse for 2-3 weeks after surgery. Sitting, using the toilet and having sexual intercourse will be painful initially. The sutures are absorbable so there is no need for suture removal after labial reduction surgery.

Risk

• A hematoma is unusual, but may require drainage and can occasionally be excessive requiring another surgery.

• Moderate discomfort.

• Minor bruising.

• Minimal swelling.

• Infection if the surgical site isn't taken care of properly.

• Hypersensitivity around the surgical scar that make take up to 6 weeks to dissipate.
