Labiaplasty Before and After

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and/or reshapes the labia minora, the skin that surrounds the vaginal opening. In most women, the labia minora are seen only when the legs are separated. However in some women, large labia minora are visible when the legs are not apart, or are barely separated, causing embarrassment, self-consciousness, and distancing in relationships. Enlarged labia may also be noticeable in tight fitting pants, and can cause discomfort during intercourse, with clothes, or with exercise. Enlarged labia are usually congenital but may be increased from hormonal changes or childbirth. Labiaplasty is a procedure to correct this problem. Your cosmetic surgeon may have before and after pictures for you to look at.

Due to having diminished strength of the vaginal walls some women experience incontinence. Also sexual enjoyment may be reduced as the frictional force generated between genital organs is decreased.

To restore your vagina's muscle tone, excess lining on the vaginal wall must be removed. Your surgeon will repair the soft tissues around the vaginal wall. This procedure will also decrease the internal and external diameters of the vagina.

Labia minor or the inner lips or folds are pieces of skin that protrude down between the labia major or the outer lips or folds. For most women, inner lips cannot be seen because they are smaller than the outer lips. However, some women born with an enlarged, elongated or asymmetrical labia minora, whereas others develop the enlargement with age or from child birth. Labiaplasty can reduce the size of your enlarged labia minor. A normal labia can improve your self-image and self confidence.

Scalpels and lasers can both be used to tighten vaginal muscles. Vaginoplasty is normally a fairly bloodless procedure. Local anesthesia is used and it is normally about a one hour outpatient procedure. If you have vaginoplasty you will be able to walk right after surgery and go back to doing light normal activity in just a few days. You can shower in the first three days after a vaginoplasty. However it is recommended that patients avoid sexual intercourse, using tampons and douching for at least six weeks. In the first 24 hours after surgery light bleeding and mild swelling is to be expected. There should be minimal swelling or bruising and any swelling should go down within a day or two.
