Post Op Care Total Vaginal Hysterectomy

If you have had to have a hysterectomy, here are a few suggestions for your post op care. You should follow all of the instructions that your surgeon gives you before you leave the hospital.

You should be your first priority, take it easy, your body has just been through a major trauma, allow yourself the rest that you need and let your friends and family pamper you. While your incision may show signs of healing on the outside, on the inside there are layers and layers of tissue that need to heal. The more rest and good nutrition you get the easier your recuperation will be.

Things that you should not do include:

• Making the bed

• Doing laundry

• Even sitting at the computer may be too much

• No vacuuming

• No driving

• No sweeping

• Do not push, pull, reach or lift for two weeks

You should drink plenty of water in order for your bladder to return to normal as well as your bowel function. If you begin to develop changes in urination, pain, burning or frequency, report this to your doctor immediately.

You should try to stand up as straight as possible, because of your incision you may have a tendency to slouch over because it hurts which should avoid because it will make your recovery much more difficult. Do not bathe or shower until your doctor gives permission to do so. Once you have the okay, make sure that someone is around just in case you need them, at least for the first few times that you bathe.

If at all possible, you should keep your stress levels down. Don't be afraid to let other people help you when and where you need it. If you are going to be home alone during the day have an ice chest next to your bed or chair for fruits, drinks, and sandwiches. Update your telephone answering machine daily to avoid having to give individual status reports to well-wishers checking in on you. If you experience and problems or complications or if you have concerns about your recovery, don't hesitate to contact your surgeon.
