One of the most important personal decisions that you can make is whether or not to have labiaplasty, or plastic vaginal surgery, another one is choosing your surgeon. It doesn't matter whether you are choosing vaginal surgery for self-esteem, vaginal discomfort or to increase sexual sensation.
Vaginal cosmetic surgery is for women who want to reduce their enlarged or uneven labia minora. Large labia minora, or vaginal lips, can lead to discomfort with certain clothing, exercise and sex. Labiaplasty is the reduction of the labia minora or the inner lips of the vagina. Lasers, scissors or a knife are the instruments used. After labia reduction, the labia edges are then sewn together with absorbable stitches. This surgery lasts between one and two hours and is generally performed under general anesthesia. Spinal anesthetic may also be used if you wish to be awake.
Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty or vaginal tightening surgery, removes excess vaginal skin to narrow the diameter of the vagina, resulting in a smaller and tighter vaginal opening. Labiaplasty is the reduction of the labia.
If your vagina becomes stretched from aging or child birth, vaginoplasty can tighten and restore the vagina and supporting structures to that pre-pregnancy state, which restores friction that can increase sexual gratification.
Anesthesia
This procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic, meaning that you will be asleep, although in carefully selected cases it can be performed under local anesthetic which means that you would be awake and the area operated on would just be numb.
Recovery
Oral medications are administered and prescribed to reduce pain, as are oral antibiotics to reduce the risk of any infection occurring. Dissolvable sutures are used, so there are no stitches to be removed. All patients heal at different rates and react differently to surgery with varying lengths of recovery. Patients can expect the labia and surrounding tissue to be slightly bruised and swollen for several days to weeks after the surgery. Light activities can be resumed as soon as you feel capable. Strenuous activity should not be undertaken for 2 weeks in most cases. Sexual activity should not be undertaken for 4-6 weeks. The final result can usually be expected after 2-3 months post op. After healing, the labial incisions are very rarely visible.
