Hypertrophic Labia

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and/or reshapes the labia minora, the skin that surrounds the vaginal opening. In most women, the labia minora are seen only when the legs are separated. However in some women, large labia minora are visible when the legs are not apart, or are barely separated, causing embarrassment, self-consciousness, and distancing in relationships. Hypertrophic labia may also be noticeable in tight fitting pants, and can cause discomfort during intercourse, with clothes, or with exercise. Hypertrophic labia are usually congenital but may be increased from hormonal changes or childbirth. Labiaplasty is a procedure to correct this problem.

The purpose of a labiaplasty is to define the inner labia, the urethral opening is redefined, and improvements can be made to the vagina. Problems with the labia can be caused by genetics, sexual intercourse or difficulties in childbirth.

When this occurs, the labia are not simply cut-off or amputated, the vaginal lips are contoured by using a variety of sculpting tools including: laser, electric cutting current, scalpel, and plastic surgery scissors. You can have both of the protruding labia minora reduced or a single side to make it symmetrical with the smaller other side. Most women want their labia minora reduced to the level or below the level of the labia majora as well as having the darkened edges of the labia removed so they are pink and more youthful in appearance.

Sutures

The labia reduction surgery usually takes about 1 to 2 hours. The sutures are made of a delayed absorbable material called Vicryl. These sutures usually dissolve in 6 weeks, however some have been known to last anywhere from 3-12 weeks. At which point they dissolve and the ends of the sutures fall off.

You should plan your surgery when you are able to take it easy for a few weeks. If your surgery is medically necessary, is classified as reconstructive surgery, it may be covered by your health insurance.
