Tubal Reversal: The Pros and Cons

You've probably seen it at least once on the news: a teenage mother gives birth secretly to a baby, and then leaves the baby in a public place. It's a horrible thought, but it has happened. However, women are becoming more proactive about guarding against pregnancy, even going so far as to having their fallopian tubes blocked.

While some women have this procedure done and never intend to have children, there are some women who have the procedure with the intent of having tubal reversal later on. So, what is tubal reversal? It is a surgical procedure in which the fallopian tubes are unblocked, which thus is supposed to allow the woman to become pregnant again.

Tubal reversal seems almost too good to be true – a promise of opening the door to motherhood again. However, it is important to note that some women cannot have this procedure done. Most of the women in this category are women aged forty and over. At this point in a woman's life, the body is preparing to go into menopause, egg production would be decreased, and the tubal reversal would probably not be successful.

As for the positive side to this procedure, if a woman is young enough, the chances of this procedure being successful are much better. It also gives a woman the right to literally choose when to become pregnant, after having experienced a period of time in which motherhood wouldn't have been a good choice. The woman who decides to undergo this procedure is being responsible – an important trait of a good parent.
