Liposuction can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity and location of treatments. Liposuction is generally performed as an outpatient procedure. Incisions are made in the skin and are usually ¼ inch in length and are placed in inconspicuous skin folds with minimal or no shaving of hair. Modern liposculpture offers treatment of various areas on the body, rather than just in the typically occurring problem areas.

Pain, swelling and bruising may occur the first week following the procedure. Between week one and three fatigue can occur, and the recovery process can both physically taxing as well as emotionally. Giving the body plenty of time to heal from liposuction is important, to allow for a safe and quick recovery. Within a week of the procedure many patients are able to get back to some daily activities, though returning to all normal activities usually takes three to six weeks post-operation.
